CONTRACT TYPE: Permanent, 28 hours per week
DEPARTMENT: Archives and Library Services – News
LOCATION: Southampton, 2/3 days per week on site required (every working day on site for 1 month training)
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: Up to £33,000 pro‑rata depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

BBC EXTEND

This role is advertised as part of our BBC Extend programme for disabled people. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Archives Technology & Services (ATS) is a team of about 200 colleagues, based across the whole of the UK. We are responsible for the collection, storage and delivery of the BBC’s content. This involves providing digital media storage and media movement technology, file delivery tools and digital archive systems across the BBC. From archive research, music library services, corporate records management and an extensive written archive service, as well as heritage artefacts. It also includes the news and sport libraries.

Digital Archivists support the charter requirements to maintain an archive for the BBC. Digital Archivists work across the BBC’s archive and library collections ensuring content is available for re‑use and exploitation. Digital archivists apply specialist knowledge of the collections for selection, research, cataloguing and compliance of content.

Digital Archivists provide high quality services to our users that present and showcase Archive content increasingly via digital delivery.


YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT

* Cataloguing content to support re‑use, search and accessibility of the archive and library collections.
* Managing enquiries from users of the BBC’s archive and library collections, supporting them to navigate and search and providing a mediated access and delivery service of content.
* Using search skills and emerging analytic tools to enable the curation of digital assets across multiple platforms.
* Working with digital and physical collections, delivering specialist services.
* Working as part of a team, as well as independently, Archivists interact with a range of customers and user communities, both BBC and externally.
* Exercising attention to detail at all times, and often working to very tight deadlines.


YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria:

* A higher education qualification in archives, records or information management; or equivalent experience of working in broadcast and media content management.
* Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of current BBC News and Current Affairs output and awareness of how these will develop in the future.
* Demonstrable knowledge of news archiving systems and their application in managing news content.
* Understanding of archive selection, metadata enhancement and awareness of rights issues.
* Examples of excellent attention to detail and ability to work to tight deadlines.

Desired but not required:

* Knowledge of broadcasting technology practices, relevant regulations.
* Interest in National and Regional news output.
* A good appreciation or knowledge of databases and computer software packages (in particular, Microsoft Excel) and their application to information services.
* Experience of working as part of a customer‑focused team.
