Overview

Non-Medical Prescribing, Education & Training Strategic Lead Pharmacist – University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSussex). This dual aspect role will take overall responsibility for all aspects of non-medical prescribing within the Trust, with a strong focus on education and training, leadership and development pathways within the Pharmacy Department.

The department supports ongoing consultant credentialling and has established progression pathways across bands and roles. We welcome applications from candidates working at advanced level seeking progression from band 8B to 8C, with a structured induction, training and development opportunities, and clear leadership and management support.

We have developed progression pathways across bands, including band 6-7, 7-8a, 8a-8c and pharmacy technician pathways, and are working on band 2-3 pharmacy assistant pathways. The aim is to retain committed staff and foster an environment of opportunity.


Job summary

University Hospitals Sussex are proud to offer an exciting opportunity to develop a Consultant Education and Training Strategic Lead Pharmacist. This dual aspect role will also take overall responsibility for all aspects of non-medical prescribing within the Trust. Within the Pharmacy Department, we are committed to developing the consultant pharmacist role and have credentialled posts with several progression pathways.

We welcome applications from candidates at advanced level seeking a progression opportunity from band 8B to 8C, with a supported induction, training and development opportunities, and strong leadership and management support. We are committed to consultant credentialling for the role and the post itself. UHSussex Pharmacy promotes education and training with progression pathways for multiple bands and roles to support staff development.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide high-level operational management of the department and act as the central link for Pharmacy Education across UHSussex, aligning with education awarding bodies, external and internal audits, and legislative requirements.

Responsibilities include operational management of pharmacy educational services, providing senior management support to the education and training team, and collaboration with the Director of Integrated Education and Trust clinical lead pharmacists to deliver education contracts locally. The post holder will contribute to building the Trust as a centre of excellence for pharmacy education and drive innovative work.

The post holder has primary responsibility and accountability for all aspects of non-medical prescribing within the Trust, managing an active database of approximately 300 NMPs. They will chair the Non-Medical Prescribing Governance Board and lead strategic development and local governance of NMPs within the Trust.

The post holder will:

* Attend relevant internal and external meetings on independent prescribing
* Present and publish relevant data locally and regionally
* Attend multidisciplinary prescribing meetings as required
* Maintain and develop the Trust NMP database
* Support all NMPs with prescribing issues and liaise with staff on roles, capabilities and expectations
* Provide prescribing advice across all grades of doctors and nurses
* Implement and uphold prescribing standards
* Represent NMP practitioners at senior Trust, local and national levels
* Attend relevant forums and contribute to prescribing standards
* Contribute to developing independent prescribing policy
* Attend Medicines Governance Committee and HEI prescribing programme board meetings
* Support the integration of pharmacy undergraduates within Trust departments
* Advise on CPD for NMPs and provide access to educational resources


Person Specification


Qualifications


Essential

* Registered member of the General Pharmaceutical Council
* Post-graduate qualification in Education and Training, Management and/or Clinical Pharmacy, or equivalent practice experience
* Experience working with multiple healthcare professions and managers
* Training in management and HR policies (absence, capability, appraisal)


Desirable

* Independent Prescriber
* Experience managing a distinct service
* Experience in strategic planning
* Working towards or achieving consultant credentialling
