The Company
Roberts & Prowse, with our Head Office based in Swindon are a well established Steelwork Fabrication, Mechanical, Electrical and Building Services Contractor operating across the Home Counties, South West & South East UK.
We have Steelwork manufacturing facilities in Bedwas - Wales, Swindon, Brill and Worminghall. We specialise in the fabrication & supply of high quality Structural Steelwork, Secondary Steelwork, Specialist Steelwork Components High Volume & Low Volume, Commercial Mechanical Pipework Systems and occasional Architectural Metalwork.
Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced Fabrication / Engineering Manager to oversee factory operations between Swindon & Worminghall, to ensure high-quality output and manage estimating for incoming enquiries.
The Role:
As Fabrication / Engineering Manager, you will report directly to the Operations Director, General Manager & Bedwas based Fabrication / Engineering Manager and be responsible for the day-to-day management of fabrication operations across both the Swindon and Worminghall factories. You will ensure that projects are delivered safely, on time, to specification and to the highest quality standards.
You will also play a key commercial role, receiving enquiries and preparing competitive estimates and quotes for all Metalwork fabrication projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage day-to-day operations of both fabrication workshops in Swindon and Worminghall
Lead and supervise fabrication teams to ensure safe, efficient and high-quality output
Oversee and perform quality inspection and testing of fabricated products prior to delivery or installation
Interpret and assess fabrication drawings and ensure accurate manufacturing
Maintain compliance with relevant required welding standards, health & safety standards and internal quality procedures
Coordinate production schedules and manage workloads to meet project deadlines
Liaise with Contracts Managers, Fabrication Engineers and Clients to ensure specifications are understood and met
Receive, review and respond to fabrication enquiries, producing accurate estimates and competitive pricing
Support continuous improvement initiatives across factory operations and quality systems
Ensure appropriate materials are purchased for each project where necessary and ensure stock levels of materials and consumables are kept to a minimum in accordance with JIT. Please Note: Some projects include Free-Issue Materials for fabrication.
Manage and maintain plant and equipment condition, maintenance schedules, and asset logs.

The Person:
To be considered for this role, you should have proven experience managing fabrication operations, with strong technical knowledge of welding, steelwork, and mechanical pipework and the ability to produce accurate estimates.
Essential Skills & Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a fabrication or workshop management role
Strong background in structural steelwork, secondary steelwork, specialist steelwork components, commercial mechanical pipework systems. With knowledge of architectural metalwork fabrication an advantage.
Excellent leadership, communication and organisational skills
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
Knowledge of quality assurance processes,
PCN Level 2 welding inspection.
Commercial experience in preparing and submitting fabrication estimates and quotations
Working knowledge of H&S regulations and safe factory operations
IT literate, MS Office Suite of tools, including Microsoft Excel etc
Full UK Driving Licence
Formal qualification in Engineering, Fabrication, or Welding (e.g. City & Guilds / NVQ / HNC, HND)
CSCS or SMSTS / SSSTS certification
Strong knowledge BS EN 1090-2, BS EN 3834-2. CE marking requirements and factory production control systems up to EXC level 4.
