The Role
The primary purpose of the Archaeological Geophysicist is to undertake geophysical surveys and analysis, ensuring work is conducted to a high standard and completed within the allocated timescales. This includes driving across the UK and staying away across the week, planning and executing surveys, liaising with landowners or external stakeholders, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, completing site paperwork, ensuring data quality, and managing a field assistant.
Geophysical surveys will mainly involve cart-based magnetometer surveys (hand-pulled or quad-towed), with potential opportunities for electromagnetic induction or ground-penetrating radar surveys depending on skills and progression. The role is primarily field-based with occasional office rotation. Office tasks include interpreting geophysical data (primarily magnetometry) and contributing to geophysical survey reports.
Roles and Salary Progression
Archaeological Geophysicist (Trainee): £26,000 rising to £26,900 after successful completion of internal training (6 months approximately).
Archaeological Geophysicist (Assistant) / Archaeological Geophysicist (Assistant Supervisor) / Geophysicist (Supervisor): £26,900 – £37,400. Training durations: Assistant ~6 months, Assistant Supervisor ~9 months, Supervisor ~12 months.
