Job Overview
At AO, we make things simple - and that applies just as much to tax as it does to helping customers find the right fridge. We’re looking for a Tax Accountant to join our Group Finance team and play a key role in keeping our UK tax compliance running smoothly. Reporting into the Tax Manager, you’ll support both direct and indirect tax responsibilities, helping ensure we stay compliant, accurate and well‑prepared in a constantly changing tax landscape.
This role is a great opportunity to deepen your tax compliance and tax accounting experience, working across VAT, corporate tax and employment taxes, while also getting involved in a variety of commercial and project‑based work. You’ll work closely with finance teams across the business, helping solve problems, improve processes and make sure tax considerations are built into decision‑making from day one.
You’ll be someone who enjoys detail, likes understanding how things work end‑to‑end, and feels comfortable balancing routine compliance with more ad‑hoc, interesting challenges.
Our people are our superpower, and we’re unstoppable when we’re together! We want your ideas to flow, and what better way to make that happen than being based onsite, 5 days a week, where our culture fuels creativity, collaboration and growth. If a £1 bet in the pub between two friends can become the UKs most trusted electrical retailer, imagine what else can be achieved when we we’re together!
Here’s What You’ll Be Doing
Your day‑to‑day will be varied, but you’ll mainly be focused on tax compliance, tax accounting and supporting wider business initiatives.

* Reviewing, validating and submitting UK VAT returns prepared by finance teams across the Group
* Supporting VAT cashflow forecasting and helping the business understand timing and impacts
* Assisting with corporate tax compliance, including preparation and review of computations and returns
* Supporting more complex filings such as capital allowances, CIR, CBCR and Pillar 2
* Assisting with the preparation of RDEC claims and related documentation
* Supporting annual employment tax reporting, including compliance submissions and reconciliations
* Helping manage responses to HMRC queries, audits and information requests
Tax accounting
* Supporting interim and year‑end tax provisioning, including deferred tax calculations
* Assisting with tax disclosures under IFRS, ensuring figures are accurate, well‑supported and clearly documented
* Working closely with Group Reporting to ensure tax balances are correctly reflected in the accounts
Supporting the wider business
* Providing tax input on new commercial activity, contracts, process changes and one‑off transactions
* Supporting tax aspects of systems or process improvements
* Helping keep tax policies, working papers and controls clear, consistent and audit‑ready
* Getting involved in ad‑hoc projects to support the Tax Manager and the wider Finance team
A Few Things About You

* UK tax experience, gained in either VAT, corporate tax or mixed tax compliance
* Hands‑on experience with tax compliance processes, returns and calculations
Exposure to tax accounting, provisions or year‑end reporting
* Experience gained in practice or in‑house is welcome
Core skills & strengths
* Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and sense‑check numbers
* High level of attention to detail, with confidence in reviewing others’ work
* A solid understanding of IFRS accounting (or the ability to build this quickly)
* Intermediate Excel skills, including working with large datasets and reconciliations
* Clear, confident communication skills - able to explain tax matters in a way that makes sense to non‑tax colleagues
* Organised, proactive and comfortable juggling deadlines
