About the Role
We are looking for a Principal Fire Engineer who wants to play a key role in the continued growth and development of our fire engineering service.
As we expand, we are continuing to strengthen and diversify our offer, positioning fire engineering as an integral part of the design process across a broad range of sectors and project types. You will contribute to this evolution by providing high-quality technical leadership, supporting the development of our people, and helping to shape the services we deliver to clients.
You will lead and oversee fire engineering commissions from early design through to delivery, developing pragmatic, proportionate and technically robust fire safety solutions that respond to project-specific risks, regulatory requirements and client objectives.
What you'll be doing
As a Principal Fire Engineer, you will lead the development of fire strategies and supporting technical advice for a range of new-build, refurbishment and existing-building projects.
You will work closely with clients, architects, design teams, approving authorities and internal colleagues to develop coordinated, evidence-based fire engineering solutions, drawing on both prescriptive guidance and performance-based approaches where appropriate.
The role will also involve technical review, project leadership, mentoring of less experienced engineers, and support for business development and client relationship management.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Lead the delivery of complex fire engineering projects from feasibility and bid stage through to completion, ensuring that technical, commercial and programme requirements are appropriately managed.
* Prepare, review and oversee fire strategy reports, technical notes and supporting design information for projects across a range of sectors and building types.
* Develop fire engineering solutions using relevant legislation, statutory guidance, British Standards and recognised engineering principles, including prescriptive and performance-based approaches where appropriate.
* Provide technical input on matters including means of warning and escape, evacuation strategy, fire-resisting construction, compartmentation, external fire spread, smoke control principles, firefighting access and facilities, and active fire safety systems.
* Lead discussions and negotiations with Building Control, fire and rescue services and other regulatory stakeholders to support agreement of fire engineering proposals.
* Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary design teams, providing clear and proportionate fire engineering advice that supports coordinated and buildable design outcomes.
* Undertake high-level technical reviews, quality assurance and peer review of reports, calculations and design outputs prepared by other members of the team.
* Mentor and support the technical development of junior and intermediate fire engineers, contributing to a positive learning and knowledge-sharing culture.
* Manage project budgets, resource requirements and delivery programmes, with an awareness of commercial performance and client expectations.
* Support fee proposals, bids, client development and wider business growth activities in line with the continued development of Bailey Partnership’s fire engineering service.
* Maintain an up-to-date awareness of changes in fire safety legislation, guidance, regulatory expectations and wider industry developments.
About you
* Degree or Master’s degree in Fire Engineering, Fire Safety Engineering, or a relevant engineering / built environment discipline.
* Professional membership of the Institution of Fire Engineers or another relevant professional body; Chartered Engineer status, or working towards it, would be advantageous.
* Substantial experience in a fire engineering consultancy or design-led built environment role.
* Demonstrable experience of preparing and leading fire strategies for UK projects across multiple design stages.
* Strong knowledge of UK fire safety legislation, statutory guidance and recognised design standards, with the ability to apply these proportionately to project-specific circumstances.
* Experience of leading client and stakeholder discussions, including the ability to clearly explain complex technical matters to non-specialist audiences.
* Proven ability to manage multiple projects, review technical work and support the development of others.
* Commercial awareness, with experience of managing fees, scope, programmes and client relationships.
* Previous experience of contributing to team leadership, service development or business development would be beneficial.
