Job Description
In this position, you will work in our London bureau to cover U.S. breaking news. The news team is nimble and covers a variety of breaking news stories – including natural disasters, crime, lawsuits, cultural events, celebrity news and also jumps on major stories that break on other beats.
As the editor on the morning shift in the U.K., you’ll take the baton from our Los Angeles team and will lead the news desk during the U.S.’s overnight hours, juggling multiple stories and allowing the New York editors to wake up to a fresh homepage and app. The editor is expected to cover a wide range of news, from deadly tornadoes to a celebrity home burglary to U.S. military actions abroad.
In this role, you’ll have to make quick judgments on which events to cover and how. Once an initial story is published, you’ll oversee it as it is updated, thoroughly vetting the reporting along the way. You’ll ensure the stories you edit include the best photos, videos, and other elements to provide context for readers as the story develops. You will know when to launch a live blog for ongoing coverage.
A key function of your role will be planning the day’s news coverage, identifying reporting lines for big stories and building the early news list with initial assignments mapped out.
You will work with the other editors and reporters on Digital as well as colleagues on broadcast. The role will report to the dayside breaking news editor based in NYC.
You will thrive on reacting instantly and responsibly to breaking news, ensuring both speed and accuracy, clarity and fairness. will be obsessive about keeping NBC News competitive on major news stories and reporting news first, meeting the challenge as a team player who never loses their cool.
Other responsibilities:
* Actively monitor sources of breaking news (Dataminr, Twitter, wires, internal communications) and be prepared to jump on news seconds after it happens.
* Expertise writing and editing SEO, social and cover headlines.
* Editing and writing clean, fast and accurate copy, headlines and photo and video captions.
* Make full use of the range of NBC News resources, including network newsgathering and multimedia.
Qualifications
Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience working in a newsroom environment that puts a priority on breaking news, with demonstrated experience assigning, writing and editing news stories.
· Flexibility on schedule.
· Must have the desire to work in a creative, demanding and competitive environment.
· Must be a skilled editor with outstanding editorial judgement and communication skills.
