Apprentice Physiologist - Neurophysiology

The closing date is 27 May 2026.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Neurophysiology team at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, as an Apprentice Clinical Physiologist. This role is ideal for someone looking to begin a rewarding career in healthcare science, combining hands‑on clinical experience with academic study through the level 6 Healthcare Science Practitioner (Physiological Sciences) apprenticeship programme with the UWE Bristol within a 3 year period progressing to a Band 5 once completed and qualified.

Working within a friendly and supportive specialist team, you will gain experience in a wide range of neurophysiological diagnostic investigations, helping to support the diagnosis and management of neurological conditions in patients of all ages. The role offers excellent opportunities for learning and development, with potential progression into a higher banded post following qualification and completion of additional training in more complex investigations.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated individual with relevant A-levels (or equivalent), a keen interest in neuroscience and patient care, and a willingness to learn in a busy clinical environment. In return, we offer a supportive training environment, exposure to specialist diagnostic techniques, and the opportunity to build a long term career within an evolving and highly valued healthcare science profession.

Main duties of the job

As an apprentice clinical physiologist you will undertake training to become a qualified healthcare science practitioner in neurophysiology through completion of the level 6 Healthcare Science (Clinical Physiology) apprenticeship, including the BSc in Healthcare Science (Neurophysiology) and relevant professional examinations.

You will assist with and learn to perform a range of neurophysiological investigations on patients of all ages, including EEG, nerve conduction studies, and evoked potentials. Duties will be carried out within the neurophysiology department and in other clinical areas including ITU, neonatal ITU, and wards both at the RVI and other hospitals in the region.

The role includes maintaining high professional standards, developing technical and analytic skills, recognising significant findings, contributing to clinical data, and working closely with clinical physiologists, healthcare scientists, clinical neurophysiologists and the wider multidisciplinary team to support the delivery of a high quality neurophysiology service.
