POSITION OVERVIEW
The Junior Sommelier supports the Head Sommelier and restaurant team in delivering an exceptional wine and beverage experience to guests. This role assists with wine service, cellar organization, and staff education while developing a deep understanding of the restaurant's beverage program. The Junior Sommelier acts as an ambassador of the wine culture, ensuring warm, knowledgeable, and attentive service that enhances the overall dining experience.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Wine & Beverage Service
* Provide professional and engaging wine service to guests, offering recommendations that complement the menu and individual preferences.
* Support the Head Sommelier in maintaining the wine list and ensuring its accuracy and presentation.
* Ensure all wines are served at the correct temperature and in the appropriate glassware.
* Assist in presenting and opening wine bottles according to service standards.
* Demonstrate a growing knowledge of wine regions, grape varieties, and pairing principles with a focus on Mediterranean and Greek wines.
* Actively promote beverage sales through confident and informed guest interactions.
Operational Support
* Assist with wine cellar organization, including proper stock rotation, labeling, and cleanliness.
* Participate in regular stock counts and assist with inventory procedures as needed.
* Support with daily operational duties, including preparation for service, setup, and closing duties.
* Follow all procedures related to POS entries, billing accuracy, and cash handling.
* Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment at all times.
* Team Collaboration & Training
* Support the Head Sommelier in delivering wine and beverage training sessions for the front-of-house team.
* Share product knowledge with colleagues to help build overall team confidence in beverage service.
* Attend daily briefings and tastings to stay informed about menu updates, wine pairings, and special offerings.
* Model professional behavior, hospitality, and teamwork at all times.
Guest Experience
* Greet and engage guests with warmth, enthusiasm, and confidence.
* Offer thoughtful recommendations tailored to guest preferences and dining selections.
* Assist in resolving guest concerns or complaints with professionalism, escalating to the Head Sommelier or Manager when necessary.
* Ensure guests' expectations are exceeded through attentive, personalized service.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
* Minimum 1–2 years of experience in a restaurant or hospitality environment, preferably in a fine-dining or wine-focused setting.
* Passion for wine, service, and hospitality with a desire to continue professional growth.
* Basic understanding of wine regions, styles, and food pairings; knowledge of Greek wines is a strong plus.
* WSET Level 2 (or equivalent) qualification preferred, or willingness to pursue certification.
* Excellent command of English; additional languages are an advantage.
* Professional appearance and demeanor.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a guest-focused attitude.
* Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
* Proficiency with POS systems and basic computer skills.
* Must have the legal right to live and work in the United Kingdom.
* Must be able to provide documented proof of eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with Home Office requirements.
* Understanding of and adherence to UK licensing laws regarding the sale and service of alcohol.
The pay rate of this position is up to £16.70 (basic + TRONC) + Tips. The determination of what a specific employee in this job classification is paid depends on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, prior employment history/job-related knowledge, qualifications and skills, etc.
