About Us: C Toms and Son Ltd is a family run boatyard working with both the fishing industry and the leisure sector. Offering both new build and refit work for the fishing industry as well as boat storage and repairs for yachts and small craft. Alongside the boatyard the company also owns and operates the Bodinnick car ferry and the Polruan passenger ferry. About the Role: Working as part of our team of welder/ fabricators, primarily on fishing vessels either as new build vessels or refit projects. Using your skills to build vessel hulls, wheelhouses and internal structures to plan as well as working on and repairing vessel hulls and structures. Main Tasks and Duties: Working mainly in mild steel but also with stainless steel. The ability to weld aluminum would be an advantage but is not essential. Stick, mig and arc welding, using appropriate company procedures for the material and for the application of the material being welded. Handling compressed cylinders, hoses and regulators, welding machines and leads and performing all other aspects of gas and electric welding, cutting and burning operations. Fabricating and/or repairing of fishing and commercial vessels under refit. Working with new build kits, laying out of parts such as plates, bulkheads, decks and frames and bracing them in position for welding. Working with assistance from lift vehicles as necessary to fit plates etc. in place on vessels. Reading and interpreting vessel plans and technical drawings. Working alongside other welders, electricians, painters and other trade specialists on projects. Attend any training and development which is required within the business. To perform all aspects of welder/fabricator duties, whilst following company policies and procedures. Being responsible for any equipment including PPE issued, including checking, cleaning and returning. Responsible for ensuring health and safety precautions are taken both in the set up of the area of work and in ensuring the appropriate PPE is worn.
