About The College/Department

Here at the University of Derby, the College of Science and Engineering is the home of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Engineering at Derby aims to deliver an outstanding learning experience, grow research capacity, and increase industry engagement to meet REF/KEF targets, with facilities at Markeaton Street. Investments include intelligent instrumentation, smart sensor technologies, robotics, renewable energy, power engineering and advanced materials.


About The Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering to contribute to teaching and research. The role involves developing and delivering flexible, high-quality teaching materials and engaging in research aligned with the University’s REF strategy. You will contribute to nuclear engineering programmes and higher degree apprenticeships, and engage with employers to align teaching with sector expectations. There is potential to collaborate with Rolls-Royce and the supply chain to build research capabilities.

Most teaching is at Markeaton Street campus; research labs are on the same site. Applicants should be aware there may be teaching at other locations.

About You

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD (or near completion) in a relevant subject, or equivalent professional achievement, with a commitment to ongoing development. You will have expertise in electrical and electronic engineering, or related disciplines, and contribute to teaching and research in areas such as Programmable Logic Controller, Power Electronics, Sensor, Electronic Communication, Electrical Machine, Intelligent Instrumentation Systems, and Embedded Systems. Experience in higher education and delivering using a range of methods, with excellent communication skills, is essential. You will demonstrate a strong foundation in your subject area through active research or practice-based outputs aligned to REF and the University’s strategy. You will also engage with employers to ensure apprenticeship delivery aligns with sector expectations and participate in external collaborations (e.g., with Rolls-Royce).

Principal accountabilities


Learning / Teaching

* Effectively teach and facilitate learning on a range of subjects/modules within the subject area across undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and post-experience programmes.
* Ensure research informs learning and teaching and supports external activities such as knowledge transfer.
* Ensure module/programme design and delivery comply with University quality standards and regulations.
* Participate in assessment processes, including setting, marking and moderation with constructive feedback in line with QA procedures.
* Contribute to ongoing module/programme development with innovative study modes and pedagogic practices to deliver outcomes and foster the Derby Graduate attributes.
* Take on module leader and/or programme leader responsibilities including marketing, recruitment and ongoing development.
* Contribute to new programme development and validation/accreditation preparation.


Research / Scholarship

* Engage in individual and collaborative research aligned with College priorities and REF contributions.
* Publish in quality journals and present at scholarly events; build external links with professional, research and industrial organisations.
* Contribute to writing bids for externally funded research projects.


Other

* Act as a personal tutor, providing mentorship and pastoral care where needed.
* Support marketing and student recruitment activities; develop external links for recruitment and placements.
* Handle administrative duties related to admissions, timetabling, examinations and student progress.
* Support cross-College/University working and adhere to University policies.

Essential Criteria


Qualifications

* Good Honours Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent
* Fellowship of the Advanced HE (HEA) or willingness to work towards
* PhD (or submitted and awaiting examination) or equivalent by publication or professional achievement
* Subject-specific qualifications/knowledge


Experience


Learning / Teaching

* Experience or knowledge of quality assurance and validation of HE modules/programmes
* Experience in higher education with ability to inspire and engage students using a range of delivery techniques


Research / Scholarship

* Demonstrable experience in electrical and electronic engineering to develop new knowledge
* Experience in research/enterprise in areas such as: PLC, Power Electronics, Sensor, Electronic Communication, Electrical Machine, Intelligent Instrumentation Systems, Embedded Systems
* Evidence of active publishing in high-quality journals or outputs contributing to REF or College/University strategy


Skills, Knowledge And Abilities

* Ability to engage and support students in engineering topics
* Digital capability and practical applications to aid learning
* Strong communication skills for diverse audiences
* IT proficiency with capability for technology-enhanced learning and research
* Networking and relationship-building skills across the University and externally
* Independent and team-working abilities; ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines

* Understanding of the higher education environment, employability agenda, and internationalisation
