Purpose of the Role
We are looking for an experienced multimedia journalist to create social media and digital video content for the BBC in the North East and Cumbria. This role involves turning news stories into engaging social content for Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, and BBC News website – link posts, graphics, carousel posts, stories, explainers, reels and digital video.
Why Join the Team
Discovering stories through social listening is a key part of this job. You’ll sift through social media, use tools to find stories, and turn daily radio and TV content into engaging social formats. You’ll also be creating original digital content with your own skills.
Key Responsibilities and Impact
* Use social listening tools to find the issues that matter most to local audiences.
* Pitch new ideas and creative treatments on the day’s news stories and continuously find and film original stories for multiple platforms across the North East and Cumbria news patch.
* Script, produce, and edit video – guiding correspondents and reporters to deliver in a way that works for social media audiences.
* Self‑shoot and edit engaging video content for our digital and social platforms.
Essential Criteria
* You have a nose for stories that translate to digital audiences and experience in creating high-impact content across multiple platforms.
* You use social listening daily to source stories and understand the social media market.
* You apply audience analytics to shape content and assess its impact.
* You are proficient in Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere or other video editing software.
* You have worked in a daily news environment, meeting tight deadlines to turn around content.
* You understand media law and the BBC’s editorial guidelines.
Application Process
As part of the application process, we invite you to create a short explainer reel for Instagram (30–90 seconds) addressing the ongoing issues of anti‑social behaviour and violence in Grangetown. Submit the reel via Dropbox, Google Drive or WeTransfer, ensuring the link remains active for at least four weeks.
