Overview

Intellectual Property Attorney - UKIFS Ltd. is a role within the UK Industrial Fusion Solutions (UKIFS) Ltd., a subsidiary of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). UKIFS leads the delivery of fusion energy through the STEP prototype and is establishing the company, attracting talent, developing a fusion supply chain, and planning and constructing the STEP prototype.


Key Responsibilities

* Advise technologists and engineers on IP matters, ensuring decisions align with the IP strategy and programme outcomes.
* Develop collaborative relationships with technical and engineering teams and act as the go-to IP expert for the specific technology stream.
* Identify, protect, and manage IP generated by the STEP technology stream; perform landscape and risk analysis; advise on IP protection options; draft and prosecute patent applications or coordinate with external counsel.
* Capture IP and maintain records in the IP register; produce IP portfolio reports documenting portfolio growth, value, and opportunities for commercialisation.
* Conduct landscape searches or engage external services; assess results, identify IP risk, and communicate risk and management strategies to stakeholders.
* Develop and manage an annual IP portfolio and budget; ensure alignment with IP and technology transfer strategies.
* Prepare and deliver IP training materials for varying levels of experience within the technology workstream; maintain the IP training register.


Qualifications

Essential

* Patent Attorney UK and/or European qualified with PQE.
* Proven experience advising technologists and engineers on IP matters; strong invention identification, capture, prior art, and inventive activity assessment.
* Extensive patent drafting and prosecution experience; experience managing an IP portfolio and communicating with stakeholders.
* Ability to work as an IP expert in a matrix/project-based environment with the capacity to manage multiple projects; strong stakeholder relationship skills.
* Excellent analytical, problem-solving, strategic thinking, and communication skills; strong technical background in a scientific or engineering discipline.

Desirable

* Experience managing IP matters in an industrial setting; IP risk assessment and freedom-to-operate analysis.
* Experience with high-quality prior art, landscape, and freedom-to-operate searching.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including DBS checks. There is a possibility of SC clearance being required in the future; if you already hold SC clearance, it can be transferred to UKIFS.
