Overview

The London Assembly scrutinises the Mayor's activities by questioning the Mayor about their decisions. The Assembly also investigates issues of importance to London. There are 25 Assembly Members, elected every four years at the same time as the Mayor. The Secretariat works for the Assembly to support its activities. The Communications Team supports the service to promote the work of the Assembly through press office, social media, publicity and events. The London Assembly Labour Group supports the work of the 11 Labour Assembly Members in representing their constituents, scrutinising the work of the Mayor and championing the needs of Londoners. The team delivers three main functions:

* Dedicated Research and Support Officers act as stakeholder engagement specialists for the Labour Group, dealing with casework, diary management and events.
* Senior Researchers provide policy support for the Labour Group across areas such as economy, environment, fire, health, housing, policing, transport, etc.
* Press Officers promote the work of the Labour Assembly Members through writing local and regional press releases, helping prepare our politicians for TV/radio interviews and creating social media content.


Role and responsibilities

In this role you will work as part of our Press Office, collaborating with our Group Manager and the Leader of the Labour Group to lead our media work. You will task manage the Communications Officer and Digital Communications Officer, and be in charge of media engagement to promote the work of the Assembly Members. This includes strategising key messages, planning story ideas, and overseeing the production of traditional and social media content. The role is based at City Hall, in the Royal Docks (Kamal Chunchie Way, London, E16 1ZE).


What your day will look like

This is a busy role combining proactive media work with reactive responses to breaking news. A typical day might include:

* Leading a short catch-up meeting with the Communications Officer and Digital Communications Officer to review the press grid and plan stories for the day ahead.
* Meeting with Assembly Members to discuss upcoming press ideas and develop delivery plans.
* Editing local newspaper articles to ensure they are fit for purpose.
* Talking to journalists to pitch upcoming story ideas and respond to interview/quote requests.


Skills, knowledge and experience

To be considered, you must meet the following essential criteria:

* Demonstrable research skills enabling quick and effective grasp of information from a range of sources on diverse policy topics, with proven policy briefing experience in a political/public sector organisation.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills, including experience writing a range of documents for different audiences and in short timescales; experience producing information for media work and briefing materials for media interviews; ability to use a range of software and media tools.
* Experience working with influential, high-profile people in pressured environments and handling confidential/sensitive information; ability to operate in a politically complex organisation with political awareness.
* Knowledge and understanding of media handling techniques and the ability to design and deliver an effective communications plan for an elected politician.
* Ability to utilise the latest information and communication technologies in relation to media issues, including designing or commissioning leaflets, newsletters and other documents.
