With plans to see SP Energy Networks (SPEN), part of the ScottishPower Group, look to invest over £5bn in transmission projects across our transmission network in central and southern Scotland by 2030, the HVDC team will play a key role in supporting SPEN to work at pace to deliver a transmission network that is required to support ambitious Scottish and UK Government 2030 targets.
SPEN are currently recruiting a Principal Engineer to join the Scottish Power Transmission (SPT) HVDC Projects team to undertake the Engineering Design function for Civil and Structural works in Eastern Green Link(EGL) Projects. The position holder will undertake design assurance activities on EPC HVDC Contracts as well as provide Civil and Structural expert advice across the HVDC Projects portfolio within the group.
This role involves working with Engineering experts from SPT and the HVDC Projects joint venture partner to support the delivery of HVDC interconnector projects and ensuring innovative designs for Civil and Structural works that meet specified functional technical requirements.
What you'll be doing
* Responsible for preparing basic and detailed engineering specifications and designs for Substation Civil and Structural works.
* Responsible for overseeing technical assessment of tender submissions and negotiations with Bidders.
* Responsible for carrying assurance of detailed engineering designs submitted by an EPC Contractor as part of the Project Design process.
* Leading and managing a group of professional design engineers for the engineering design and delivery of Civil and Structural works for the HVDC converter stations and interfaces.
* Support the preparation of accurate budgets for new projects.
* Provide overall Civil and Structural Engineering technical leadership across the HVDC projects with responsibility for providing expert advice and guidance to Civil and Structural Design Engineers.
* Work in collaboration with other Engineering experts to support Scottish Power Business in the development and or improvement of existing or new Civil and Structural Engineering Design standards across SPT.
* Ensure all substation civil infrastructure designs meet the current legislation, policies and operational requirements.
* Provide technical support to the Project Development and Project Site Delivery teams on matters concerning the civil and structural design, construction and operation of power systems substations and associated equipment
* Lead and contribute to training needs assessment for new equipment as well as the development and delivery of technical, operational and safety packages.
* Provide leadership on the development of innovative technical initiatives e.g., new tools, systems, and approaches to exploit new engineering opportunities such as BIM and new construction material and methodologies and across the transmission industry.
* Manage the interface between the Civil and Structural function and other relevant parts of the SPEN business; Transmission Operations teams, Asset Engineers, Engineering Policy etc.
* Participate and direct cross-discipline transfer of expertise with fellow Principal Engineers and Section Heads, acting as a key link for interactivity with other engineering experts/departments, including other Transmission Operators.
* Provide leadership & talent development by coaching project, senior and lead engineers through a culture of continuous professional development.
* Ensuring that best practices and lessons are learnt and shared across the HVDC Engineering team.
What you'll bring
* Proven experience/expert knowledge in design of Civil and Structural works. Working knowledge of delivery of capital projects in the power industry at voltages of 33kV to 400kV would be advantageous.
* Ability to implement, apply and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practice in a design environment.
* Ability to manage under pressure and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment with a diverse and demanding workload.
* Experience in working in a dynamic environment and ensuring delivery of engineering outputs.
* Direct or indirect line management and leadership experience and working in a dynamic environment with interfaces with internal and external stakeholders.
* Ability to operate in an environment of uncertainty and incomplete information and make well-reasoned decisions.
* People and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships with other individuals, departments and businesses.
* Experience in the implementation of new technologies and engineering solutions to achieve reductions in Carbon to produce a more sustainable substation design solution
* Experience in the use of BIM for designing Transmission substations.
Minimum Qualifications
* Degree in Civil & Structural Engineering with relevant experience.
* Chartered Engineering Status (or working towards)
* Experience in Civil and Structural Design of large electrical infrastructure projects is desirable.
* Experience of Civil & Structural Engineering detailed design is essential
