Lecturer in Modern British History, c.1800-2000 (Teaching and Scholarship)

The School of Global Affairs at Lancaster University is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Modern British History, c.1800-2000 (Teaching and Scholarship). This is a 1.0 FTE post for 12 months starting on 1 August 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter, providing cover for a colleague on a Koch History Centre Senior Fellowship.

You will be asked to contribute to teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate modules such as ‘Modern Worlds’, ‘Handling Historical Evidence’, ‘Modern Britain’, ‘Advertising and Consumerism in Britain, 1853-1960’, and ‘Modernity and Mass Society’. In addition, you will make a more general contribution to History teaching programmes at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, for example by supervising dissertations. You may be expected to assume responsibility for various administrative tasks and will be expected to play a full role as a member of the History community at Lancaster.


About you

You should have experience of undergraduate teaching and ideally experience of postgraduate teaching as well. You should have an active programme of research. You will be expected to have completed their PhD.

Your research and/or teaching should engage with the history of modern Britain and the social and cultural histories of the economy, advertising, or consumerism.
