Offer description

Overview

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated practitioner to join our friendly team for a temporary one year post to cover maternity leave. The successful applicant will have a practitioner role within the department, delivering brachytherapy, carrying out QC and generating treatment plans for prostate, gynaecological and skin brachytherapy. It is a role with plenty of variety and we work together with the wider team of clinical scientists, clinical oncologists, and theatre/nursing staff to deliver world class brachytherapy. We encourage applications for flexible/part time working—please get in touch to discuss how this might work before applying. Please note our current operational hours are 8am-6pm.

Responsibilities

* Provide treatment to patients undergoing brachytherapy, including the High Dose Rate Afterloader, and associated patient care.
* Attend brachytherapy insertions in the brachytherapy theatre, including set up, documentation, quality control and cleaning of radiotherapy medical devices.
* Plan brachytherapy treatments with contouring of organs at risk, applicator reconstruction, and dose optimisation.
* Undertake routine quality control of radiotherapy equipment and medical devices as a significant part of the role.
* Ensure all work complies with current UK legislation for work with ionising radiation (IRR 2017, IR(ME)R 2017) and the radiotherapy quality system (9001-2015).
* Register as a therapy radiographer with the HCPC or be on the voluntary register of clinical technologists and undertake regular continuing professional development.
* Prioritise and manage own work on a day-to-day basis; participate in a rota for core tasks.
* Work at The Christie in Withington, with potential work at other local hospitals; hours are flexible in agreement with the line manager to provide round-the-clock services as required.
* Connect patient applicators for treatment, including moving and handling patients.
* Provide information and support to patients undergoing complex brachytherapy procedures, often in peri-operative settings.
* Attend multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to discuss and review cases, offering suggestions to optimise treatment plans.
* Handle internal and external inquiries from other professional groups and patients.
* Assist with the insertion of brachytherapy applicators and maintain associated records.
* Liaise with other departments to support patient pathways and transfers.
* Programme and operate brachytherapy afterloaders delivering high doses of radiation.
* Carry out scheduled QA checks on radiotherapy equipment and report faults to MPE/engineers; ensure equipment is returned to clinical use following correct processes.
* Demonstrate safe use of medical devices, contribute to commissioning of new equipment, routine QA and problem reporting.
* Produce highly complex brachytherapy plans for various treatment sites using planning systems and imaging modalities (CT/MR/US).
* Evaluate and check complex brachytherapy plans prior to treatment.
* Undertake post-implant dosimetry for prostate seed implants, providing reports and analysis.
* Demonstrate knowledge of brachytherapy physics including independent checking of calculations, techniques, and equipment.
* Identify and escalate brachytherapy problems/errors/near misses in collaboration with MPE, leadership team and Consultant Oncologists.
* Participate in implementing new processes and techniques, including generation of work instructions for the quality system.
* Participate in departmental clinical audit, governance, and research programme.
* Training and Education: provide specialist training in radiation protection, brachytherapy equipment, and techniques to staff including trainees and students; disseminate knowledge via lectures, tutorials, and other methods.
* Research and Development: participate in projects for review and development of clinical techniques and clinical trials.

Requirements / Qualifications

* State registration as Clinical Technologist (VRCT) or as a therapy radiographer (HCPC). If not currently registered, be on the voluntary register of clinical technologists and undertake regular continuing professional development.
* Be able to connect patient applicators for treatment and participate in peri-operative patient care.
* Commit to prioritising and managing own work with a rota for core tasks; demonstrate flexibility and teamwork.
* Possess knowledge of and compliance with IRR 2017, IR(ME)R 2017 and the radiotherapy quality system (9001-2015).
* Be able to work as part of a team at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, with a willingness to work at other local hospitals as required.
* Excellent communication skills and ability to handle患者 patients who may be distressed, anxious or in pain.
