Rate of Pay: £13.69- £17.41 per hour Summary: Monmouthshire County Council is seeking a committed and physically capable Highways Operative to join its Highways Operations team. The role involves working as part of a professional crew responsible for maintaining the highway network across South East Wales to ensure safety and accessibility 24/7. The position requires carrying out a range of maintenance tasks including pothole repairs, drainage, fencing, and winter operations. Responsibilities: Perform general highway maintenance duties including potholing, drainage, fencing, grass cutting, masonry, and litter picking. Operate construction equipment and tools (e.g., rollers, breakers, compactors, disc cutters, wheeled loading shovel). Conduct basic setting out and work to levels. Record work activity and safety assessments, possibly using electronic systems. Follow Health & Safety regulations, wear PPE, and report unsafe practices. Participate in winter maintenance duties and be available for standby/rota arrangements. Provide guidance to other operatives as needed. Experience: Previous experience in highways or general outdoor maintenance operations is desirable. Experience in using construction plant and small tools is essential. Familiarity with health & safety procedures in manual or construction-based work settings. Essentials: Ability to perform heavy physical manual work over long periods. Competence in operating highway maintenance equipment and tools. Understanding of health & safety responsibilities, including PPE usage.
