Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Haematology & Blood Transfusion

HCAS (Inner or outer) will be based upon your allocated site

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership's (ESEL) Haematology Department as we currently have Specialist Biomedical Scientist vacancies across our partnership sites.

We require strong team players with a positive attitude to working in a flexible manner, committed to supporting the clinical services of the Trust and meeting the needs of our patients by participating in a 24-hour Agenda for Change shift system.

The ESEL partnership consists of the following hub and spoke sites: Royal London Hospital (hub), St Bartholomew's Hospital, Newham University Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital, Homerton Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Woolwich) and University Hospital Lewisham.

The successful candidates will be primarily based at one of the following sites (SBH, NUH, QEH or UHL) but may be expected to cover and support other ESEL sites depending on service demand.

All laboratories are UKAS accredited,utilise Winpath LIMSand areequipped with Sysmex systems in Haematology and Coagulation across all sites. Blood Transfusion employsBio-Rad and Grifols analysers to support the largest Blood Transfusion department in the UK.

Main duties of the job

The Specialist Haematology section at RLH is equipped with Bio-rad Variant II and Sebia Capillarys systems whilst the Specialist Haemostasis section offers an extensive testing repertoire to support the respective Comprehensive Care Centres within Barts Health for Haemophilia, Sickle Cell Anaemia, Thalassaemia and paediatric haematology.

The successful candidateMUSTbe registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical ScientistANDhave completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio.

Note: Candidates who do not hold the completed IBMS Specialist Diploma may be considered but will be taken on under an Annex 21 contract where a percentage of Specialist Band 6 BMS salary will apply. Training support will be provided for completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma across a day and night working pattern.


About us

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites. Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.

The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE. Person Specification


Qualifications

* BSc. Biomedical Science or equivalent Holder of the IBMS Certificate of Competence, Registration Portfolio.
* Evidence of continuous professional development.
* Registered as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council


Experience

* At least 3 years post HCPC registration diagnostic experience in Haematology & Blood Transfusion
* Experience with a computerised laboratory information system.
* Previous experience working in a large medical laboratory.
* Experience of working as a team
* Experience of a variety of diagnostic techniques in Haematology.
* Experienced using the following named IT systems oWinPath Enterprise (Clinisys). oQ-Pulse
* Demonstrate ability to use own initiative when dealing with patients/staff to solve problems


Knowledge

* Advanced scientific knowledge for relevant discipline
* Detailed understanding of UKAS, Quality Management Systems
* Good understanding of Health & Safety Legislation
* Good understanding of Governance Requirements
* Knowledge of Quality Management System and can demonstrate participation in obligatory activities


Skills

* Competent in basic laboratory techniques and troubleshooting
* Good time management.
* Working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet packages
* Ability to analyse, interpret, and present routine data/results/concepts
* Able to communicate effectively (written and verbal).
* Polite, helpful and confident manner
* Working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet packages


Other

* Able to work as part of a team.
* Able to perform required duties with any appropriate aids or adaptations
* Respects confidentiality.
* Hold no reservations in handling human body fluids, tissue, organs, or infected material in accordance with Health & Safety policies.
* The post holder must be willing to have appropriate vaccinations
* Previous NHS experience.
* Good interpersonal skills.
* Adaptable and flexible.
