Clinical Engineer

The Clinical Engineering Department is responsible for delivering complete medical equipment management on behalf of the Trust, including City Road and all Moorfields Network sites. The post holder will provide front‑line technical support for the Trust’s clinical areas, contribute to the operation and development of a fit‑for‑purpose department at a Trust‑wide level, and support the Trust‑wide transition to ORIEL, ensuring safe commissioning, migration and readiness of medical devices during the move from City Road to the new facility.
Main duties of the job
* Provide day‑to‑day operational support for medical equipment, including maintenance, fault resolution, PPM servicing, acceptance testing, training and record keeping, ensuring safe and reliable performance in line with departmental KPIs and financial controls.
* Support the ORIEL transition through equipment migration, commissioning, double‑running support, documentation development and stakeholder engagement to minimise service disruption and ensure continuity of patient care.
* Attend to equipment breakdowns logged via the Trust intranet or phone.
* Carry out routine PPM servicing on a range of medical equipment, including specialised ophthalmic equipment, in line with manufacturers’ recommendations.
* Maintain accurate medical equipment inventory and financial records within set targets.
* Deliver training and operational engineering support during the dual‑site running period (City Road + ORIEL).
* Participate in ORIEL equipment‑related working groups and assist with the development of ORIEL‑specific SOPs, commissioning workflows and readiness documentation.
* Provide training support to clinical staff and Clinical Engineering colleagues on new ORIEL‑installed devices.
* Liaise with clinical services, Estates, ICT and suppliers to ensure smooth transition activities.
Person specification
Education/Qualification
* Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Computing.
* Recognised industry qualifications (e.g. Medical Equipment certification, Project Management).
* EST certified.
* Post‑graduate degree in Medical Devices Management or equivalents.
* Professional registration (Clinical Scientist, RTC) or working towards it.
Experience
* Extensive knowledge of test procedures used to verify the performance of medical equipment.
* Competent to plan and carry out servicing, including electrical safety testing, on a range of medical equipment.
* Experience of managing and prioritising own workload and working to deadlines.
* Specialist experience in ophthalmic medical equipment.
* Experience of working on a project assignment or taking an additional responsibility.
* Experience with a Quality Management System.
* Experience with Medical Technology networking/connection.
Knowledge
* Knowledge of test procedures used to verify safety and performance of specialist medical equipment.
* Extensive knowledge of medical equipment databases.
* Competency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
* Medical technology networking/connection.
* Knowledge of specialist ophthalmic medical equipment.
* Medical technology imaging applications.
* Medical technology software updates and upgrades.
