Technical Manager – Fire Legacy Developments role at Berkeley Group Plc. Role

The role

Berkeley Homes (East London) LTD seeks a highly skilled Technical Manager to lead the assessment of legacy schemes within the portfolio as part of discharging our Developer Remediation Contract (DRC) obligations. This pivotal role requires expertise in facade remediation, deep knowledge of UK building regulations, and a proven track record in managing medium to high-rise projects. The successful candidate will ensure compliance, safety and quality while driving innovation in refurbishment and retrofit strategies.


Responsibilities

* Technical Leadership & Facade Expertise
* Lead the internal and external assessment process of legacy schemes, ensuring compliance with UK building regulations (e.g., Part B Fire Safety, Part L Conservation of Fuel and Power), Building Safety Act 2022, and PAS 9980 fire risk assessments.
* Assist with design, specification and execution of medium/high-rise facade projects, addressing structural integrity, fire safety, thermal performance, and aesthetic standards.
* Assist with the review of contractor proposals, technical drawings, and material specifications to align with project-specific requirements.
* Resolve complex technical challenges, balancing cost, programme, and regulatory obligations.
* Provide technical guidance on refurbishment of aging regional assets, including structural and façade remediation.
* Oversee PAP responsibilities to ensure Building Safety Cases are submitted, kept live, and MOR processes are followed.
* Legislative & Regulatory Compliance
* Ensure adherence to all relevant façade and internal related legislation and building regulations (e.g., Fire Safety Act 2021, Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015, EWS1 certification).
* Advise on planning policies, environmental standards (e.g., BREEAM), and health/safety protocols.
* Liaise with Approved Inspectors, NHBC, BSR and external consultants to secure certifications and approvals.
* Monitor updates to cladding remediation mandates and retrofit standards, updating internal processes accordingly.
* Manage budgets, timelines, and risk mitigation strategies for regional legacy developments.
* Conduct site inspections to verify compliance with technical specifications and safety standards.
* Lead post-completion reviews to capture lessons learned and implement process improvements.
* Stakeholder Collaboration
* Partner with internal teams (Design, Procurement) and external stakeholders (Residents, Managing Agents, Resident Associations/Management Companies, local authorities, structural engineers, fire safety experts).
* Lead the negotiation of Works Remediation Contracts where required to facilitate work.
* Act as the technical authority in resident meetings, client meetings, public consultations, and regulatory discussions.
* Prepare clear reports for senior leadership on project progress, risks, and compliance status.
* Liaison with Building Safety Regulator.


Experience required

* Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering, Architecture, or Building Surveying.
* Track record of delivering complex legacy schemes.
* Experience in facade remediation with a focus on medium/high-rise residential or commercial projects.
* Proven expertise in UK facade legislation, building regulations, and EWS1 certification processes.
* Experience with Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) for retrofit.
* Knowledge of London planning policies.

Working hours
