Overview
The successful candidate will join an established medical team in the Medicine and Emergency Care Division, which is currently expanding and redesigning. The post holder will provide senior decision making support to the emergency medical pathway and to the ongoing provision of safe, personal and effective medical care to acutely unwell patients and/or patients attending Diabetes & Endocrinology clinics. They will work alongside Diabetes & Endocrinology consultants who will be available to provide support as needed, but it is expected that the post holder will largely be able to manage their own patient workload.
This is a new role within the department, with job plans negotiated on an individual annualised basis and time allocated for CPD, training, service development, research or individual specialty interests where appropriate. Sub-specialty interests will be discussed and supported where appropriate to the applicant and the service.
Responsibilities
* Provide senior decision making support to the emergency medical pathway and to the care of acutely medically unwell patients and/or patients attending Diabetes & Endocrinology clinics.
* Share responsibility for managing their own patient workload with support from Diabetes & Endocrinology consultants as needed.
* Contribute to weekend duties and participate in clinical administration as required.
* Engage in service development, training and research where appropriate, and pursue further specialty interests in a supported environment.
Qualifications and Experience
* For entry into the Specialty Doctor grade, applicants must have at least 2 years of experience in Diabetes & Endocrinology outpatients after full Registration.
* Demonstrable experience and expertise in dealing with patients with general and complex diabetic & endocrine conditions in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
* Ability to participate in unselected acute medical take in General Medicine and to work with remote Consultant support if needed.
Career Development and Support
* Applicants will be supported to advance their career in Diabetes & Endocrinology and General Medicine, including pursuit of the CESR process to gain GMC specialist registration in both specialties.
* There is an active SAS mentoring system to help develop clinical and non-clinical skills.
Contract Details
* The post title is “Specialty Doctor in Diabetes & Endocrinology and Medicine Specialties” and the post is paid on the Specialty Doctor scale; part-time applications will be considered.
* Job plans are annualised with time allocated for CPD, training, service development, research or individual specialty interests; sub-specialty interests will be discussed and supported where appropriate.
* There is an expectation to contribute to weekend duties and to support colleagues and the service in line with department requirements.
