Main Purpose of Job The work undertaken by The James Hutton Group is at the top of the global agenda tackling problems such as the impact of climate change and threats to food, crops, natural biodiversity, soils and water security. The main role will be to assist scientific staff within the Environmental and Biochemical Sciences department in Dundee with sample preparation and some basic analyses but will also assist in other laboratories when appropriate. They will work under the guidance of a research assistant with input from other research staff. They will assist in sample preparation of mainly food and crop samples including weighing, drying, extract preparation, basic assays, and operation of specific instruments. The role will also involve ensuring laboratory and instruments are clean. When required, the person will help support commercial work carried out by the Mylnefield Lipid Analysis unit which is part of James Hutton Limited. Some field work/ plant harvesting is involved. All training provided. Main Duties of Postholder Weighing and preparing samples for analysis. Record keeping. Sample preparation (harvesting, milling, and extractions). Carrying out basic analyses for various compounds Producing chemical solutions and reagents Data collection and input onto pre-written templates, software, and databases Maintain laboratory cleanliness and adhere to health and safety guidelines Person Specification Education/Experience/Skills Essential HNC in Science subject (Chemical / Life Sciences) Ability to work cleanly & accurately Ability to pick up new skills and work unsupervised Methodical and organised approach to work and reporting Ability to use Excel spreadsheets Basic word processing skills Desirable Previous laboratory experience Experience in running specific analyses Experience with plants/ crops Adaptability and ability to work in groups What we offer Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) - A confidential service available to support employees and their families with work or personal problems.
