About the Role As a Highway Officer, you will inspect the road network to ensure it remains safe for all users. Using your knowledge and judgement, you will prioritise repairs, raise works orders for contractors, and carry out emergency or minor repairs when required. This role involves working independently within the community and includes frequent interaction with members of the public, Councillors, and other stakeholders. You will also take part in the winter maintenance rota, monitoring the network for hazards outside normal working hours. A van will be provided to support you in this role. North Yorkshire Council (NYC) is reviewing some elements of its service currently delivered by NYC’s Highway Operations teams; this will see a shift of some functions, including the Highway Officer’s duties (and staff), to the council’s teckal company and partner contractor, NY Highways later this year. Key Responsibilities: Inspecting roads and highways to identify safety issues and maintenance needs. Raising accurate works orders using computer systems. Carrying out minor manual repairs and responding to emergencies. Working to resolve issues identified by the general public. Participating in a winter standby rota to monitor and respond to network hazards. Engaging with the public and stakeholders in a professional and approachable manner. What you can Bring: Experience in highways or civil engineering works. Computer literacy – ability to use systems to log inspections and raise orders. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to work independently and manage your own time effectively. A positive attitude and willingness to take initiative.
