Overview
Working as a Dental Nurse within a team to provide a high level of clinical care within the Community Specialist Dental Service and support the Dental Officers in all aspects of clinical practice.
Main duties and responsibilities
* Provide support for patients specific to the Community Specialist Dental Service, including patients with learning disabilities, Autism and sensory issues, complex medical conditions, compromised mobility and severe emotional or mental health problems.
* Assist in the provision of treatment with Relative Analgesia Sedation and General Anaesthetic.
* Carry out routine administration and clerical organisation, including use of SystmOne for patient appointments and clinical rotas.
* Reception of patients, prepare them for dental treatment and supervise patients until they leave the surgery.
* Prepare the dental surgery efficiently and manage stock control.
* Be responsible for decontamination and follow trust policies and procedures at all times.
* Monitor, care for and ensure safe use of dental equipment.
* Triaging daily referrals and analyse options to determine the most suitable care for patients.
* Travel to different Community Dental sites when necessary.

Clinical duties and responsibilities
* Reception of patients, prepare them for dental treatment and supervise the patient until they leave the department.
* Efficient preparation of the surgery and stock control.
* Knowledge of all dental procedures and assist the dental officer in all clinical dental procedures.
* Processing and mounting of x-ray films.
* Provide support for emergency patients and trauma cases.
* Deliver oral hygiene instruction and diet advice for a diverse range of needs.
* Care for medically compromised and emotionally disturbed patients, including those with learning difficulties, compromised mobility, or potential aggression.
* Carry out pre-operative checks (blood pressure/INR/Glucose) after appropriate training.
* Assist in safe transfer of patients with compromised mobility using equipment (hoist, slip sheet, transfer board, or rota stand) after appropriate training.
* Responsible for decontamination and monitoring of high-risk working conditions and chemicals.
* Monitor, care for and ensure safe use of equipment.
* Assist in dental screening programs and participate in relevant training and mandatory essential training.
* Ensure Health and Safety responsibilities are carried out per Trust requirements.
* Sedation and General Anaesthetic: assist during conscious sedation including relative analgesia sedation (training/qualification in Conscious Sedation required if not held).
* Monitor gases, change cylinders when appropriate, perform routine checks and maintenance of sedation equipment.
* Coordinate pre-operative assessments with the Day Surgery Team; assist the theatre team during dental procedures.
* Record patient data and provide holistic care during pre- and post-operative periods; organize patient beds and records as appropriate.
* Contribute to Clinical Governance, Clinical Audit (regional and national) and national dental surveys; ensure paperwork is prepared and completed.
Qualifications and experience
* Essential: Knowledge of all dental procedures; ability to assist the dental officer in all clinical procedures; relevant chairside experience; Registration of Dental Nurses; NEBDN National Diploma in Dental Nursing; Verifiable Professional Development Hours; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; valid driving/essential car user if required.
* Desirable: Knowledge of computers and SystmOne; experience of dealing with medically compromised patients, autism and mobility challenges; experience of assisting in General Anaesthetic; experience in a community setting; minimum of 4 GCSEs; NEBDN Certificate in Conscious Sedation; Diploma in Dental Health Education; Certificate in Special Care Dental Nursing; experience working with a theatre team.
