Overview
FPGA Firmware Engineer at BAE Systems Digital Intelligence in Gloucester, UK. This role is part of the Cross-Domain (XD) team delivering high‑performance appliances for the Defensive Cyber market. We develop from a blank sheet with security as a primary consideration, designing the whole appliance from high‑performance C++, embedded software, FPGA firmware (VHDL), and hardware such as custom PCBs, power distribution and thermal management to deliver reliable and maintainable capabilities for customers.
Responsibilities
* Be involved in the full lifecycle of product development, from concept and design through delivery and support.
* Predominantly use Altera FPGAs with code developed in VHDL; familiarity with at least one modern FPGA tool chain (ideally Altera, but Xilinx, Achronix, or similar is acceptable).
* Collaborate as part of the Cross-Domain product team (circa 50 people in Gloucester) within the broader BAE Systems Digital Intelligence capability in the UK.
* Contribute to a secure, reliable, and maintainable appliance delivered to customers.
Useful experience
* VHDL design experience is essential.
* High-bandwidth data processing in FPGAs.
* Working with high-bandwidth FPGA interfaces (e.g., networking and DRAMs).
* Design of security appliances.
* Task planning and appreciation of hardware design best practices.

Security clearance and eligibility
Due to the nature of Cross-Domain work, candidates must hold, or be eligible to gain UK security clearance and meet nationality requirements. We cannot offer regular remote working, but provide a flexible working environment that respects personal lives. Many roles require security and export control checks and baseline security standards. Some roles may require higher levels of National Security Vetting with 5–10 years of continuous UK residency depending on the level.
