Ward are an award-winning, family-owned business operating in the waste management and recycling sector across the East Midlands, North West and York. With over 400 employees and a proud reputation for innovation and sustainability, we are looking for an Environment & Sustainability Manager who will not just tick boxes – but shout from the rooftops about everything environmental at Ward.
This is not a role for someone who wants to stay behind a desk. We want a confident, enthusiastic, and passionate environmental leader who is happy to:
* Give presentations at all levels, from shop floor briefings to Board updates
* Represent Ward at industry networking events, conferences and committees
* Be a visible presence across our sites, inspiring teams and driving change
If you’ve got the personality, character and voice to really lead from the front, we’d love to hear from you.
The Role
* Ensure Ward fulfils its environmental and sustainability legal compliance obligations
* Maintain our ISO 14001:2015 accreditation and environmental permits
* Drive forward Ward’s 10-year sustainability roadmap – The Ward Way
* Contribute to tenders and bids
* Collect and analyse data, producing engaging reports and recommendations for the Board
* Represent Ward externally through the BMRA Low Carbon Committee, CIWM Waste Regulation SIG, and other key industry forums
* Lead by example, conducting site audits and working alongside operational teams to bring environmental awareness across all nine of our sites
* Take line management responsibility for our Environmental Advisor, while working closely with our Sustainability and Asbestos Manager
* Build strong links with our Health, Safety and Compliance team, ensuring a joined-up approach to environmental leadership across the business
You’ll also work alongside the Compliance team in the delivery of key environmental programmes, including ESOS, SECR, Decarbonisation Plans, SBTi, and Climate Change Adaptation Plans.
About You
* A degree in an environmental discipline
* At least 3 years’ experience in Environmental Management or a senior sustainability role
* Knowledge of EcoVadis (or similar reporting platforms)
* Previous management experience (you’ll lead our Environmental Advisor)
* Experience in the waste and recycling sector is advantageous, but not essential
We are looking for someone who can inspire others, tell our sustainability story with conviction, and help shape the future of our business.
What We Offer
* A competitive salary (negotiable based on experience)
* Enhanced annual leave entitlement
* Company benefits including life assurance, Employee Assistance Programme, discounts on Ward services, retail and holiday discounts through our Wisdom App
* An electric company car to support travel across our sites
This is a chance to take on a role with real impact and visibility, leading environmental change across a business that’s proud of its family values and ambitious sustainability goals.
If you’re ready to bring your voice, vision and passion to Ward, we’d love to hear from you
