Description Job Title: Lead Shopify Developer Salary : circa £50,000 to £60,000 depending on experience Location: ideally to work on a hybrid basis at our HQ in Stockton-on-Tees, although we will consider candidates further afield. Role overview The Lead Shopify Developer is responsible for the development, customisation, and optimisation of Shopify and Shopify Plus stores. It’s responsible for delivering high-performing, scalable eCommerce experiences, ensuring best practice development standards and driving continuous improvement across our Shopify ecosystem. A guide to what the Lead Shopify Developer does at Additional Lengths Lead the end-to-end development, customisation and ongoing maintenance of Shopify and Shopify Plus stores, leveraging extensive platform knowledge to deliver scalable, secure and high-performing eCommerce solutions. Use strong expertise in Liquid, JavaScript (ES6), HTML5 and CSS3 to build and maintain bespoke Shopify themes that align with brand guidelines, UX best practice and conversion optimisation principles. Design and develop custom Shopify apps using technologies (such as React), ensuring seamless integration with existing systems and business processes. Utilise in-depth knowledge of Shopify’s Storefront and Admin APIs (REST and GraphQL) to build robust integrations, extend store functionality and support headless or custom storefront implementations where required. Optimise website performance, speed and technical SEO, applying best practice techniques to enhance user experience. Implement responsive, mobile-first designs, ensuring consistent functionality and user experience across all devices and browsers. Integrate and manage third-party applications, payment gateways, shipping solutions and ERP/CRM systems, ensuring secure, efficient and reliable data flow between platforms. Manage and collaborate effectively with external development agencies on large-scale or complex projects, providing technical direction and reviewing deliverables. Conduct thorough code reviews and champion best practice development standards, version control and structured deployment processes to maintain code quality and long-term maintainability. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues using strong analytical and problem-solving skills, minimising downtime and ensuring business continuity. Collaborate closely with designers, marketers and other teams within the business to translate business requirements into technical solutions that support commercial objectives and customer experience goals. Manage multiple projects and priorities seamlessly, whilst maintaining a high level of attention to detail and quality. Stay up to date with Shopify platform updates, emerging technologies and wider eCommerce trends, proactively identifying opportunities for innovation and improvement. About You We’re ideally looking for someone with: Extensive experience developing and managing Shopify and Shopify Plus stores end-to-end Strong proficiency in Liquid, JavaScript (ES6), HTML5 and CSS3, with the ability to build bespoke, high-performing themes Experience developing custom Shopify apps (e.g. using React) and working with Shopify APIs (REST and GraphQL) Solid understanding of performance optimisation, site speed, technical SEO and conversion best practices Confident implementing responsive, mobile-first designs with cross-browser compatibility Experience integrating third-party systems, including payment gateways, shipping solutions and CRM platforms Strong knowledge of development best practices, including code reviews, version control and structured deployment processes Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues efficiently, minimising disruption Comfortable leading projects and collaborating with internal teams and external agencies Able to translate business and commercial requirements into effective technical solutions Highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail Proactive in staying up to date with Shopify updates, emerging technologies and eCommerce trends, with a focus on continuous improvement Whilst the above describes the type of person we’re looking for, we have great training and development capabilities, so even if you don’t tick every point, we’d still love to hear from you.
