Protection & Control Engineer (Energy) – WSP, UK & Ireland
Join WSP’s Energy business as a Protection & Control Engineer and contribute to the delivery of power transmission infrastructure that supports the UK’s Net Zero journey. Work within a multidisciplinary team on projects such as over 300 km of OHL design.
Key Responsibilities
* Design protection and control systems for electrical power transmission and distribution networks.
* Develop detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and design documentation using AutoCAD and ETAP.
* Perform technical calculations and analysis to ensure reliability and performance of protection and control systems.
* Ensure designs comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
* Conduct site surveys and assessments to gather data for design purposes.
* Collaborate with project managers, electrical engineers, and construction teams to integrate design requirements into project plans.
* Review and approve design modifications and provide technical support during installation and commissioning.
* Conduct design reviews and quality assurance checks to ensure accuracy and completeness.
* Stay updated with the latest advancements in protection and control technology and design practices.
Required Qualifications
* Minimum HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering.
* Proven experience in the design of protection and control schemes.
* Knowledge of electrical networks and engineering standards.
* Experience interpreting technical documentation relating to design.
* Familiarity with main suppliers’ substation control equipment (ABB, Hitachi, Siemens, GE).
* Experience with IEC 61850 and IEC 60870 protocols.
* Preferable: Chartered engineer status in progress or attained.
* Preferable: National Grid BP141 authorisation.
