Overview
This role involves advanced podiatry care within an acute secondary care setting. The successful candidate will work across inpatient wards and outpatient clinics, providing specialist assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and supervision to patients with diabetes, complex vascular wounds, and surgical interventions. The post requires flexible working hours, including weekend cover, and occasional travel to Ellesmere Port Hospital.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage a complex clinical caseload of high‑risk patients using evidence‑based practice.
* Provide and maintain a high level of care as an HCPC registered Podiatrist.
* Deliver advanced podiatry skills including pressure offloading, casting, vascular assessment, and wound debridement.
* Maintain knowledge of wound dressing products and apply evidence‑based decision making.
* Participate in prescription of antibiotics and other prescription‑only medication.
* Request and interpret imaging and lab reports, recommending further investigations.
* Explain complex medical scenarios to patients compassionately, e.g., the need for amputation.
* Work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team in outpatient clinics, MDFT foot clinics, and inpatient wards.
* Triage referrals based on agreed criteria to ensure patient safety.
* Liaise effectively with other health‑care professionals to meet individual patient needs.
Qualifications – Essential
* BSc (Hons) Podiatric Medicine or equivalent.
* HCPC registration with evidence of continued CPD.
* MSc or MSc module, or willingness to work towards.
Qualifications – Desirable
* IRMER certificate.
* Prescribing qualification.
* Local Anaesthesia certificate.
* Prescription only medicines certificate.
Knowledge & Experience – Essential
* Evidence of postgraduate professional development in diabetes and high‑risk wound management, at a masters level or equivalent.
* Experience at band 6 with a high‑risk caseload and responsiveness to clinical queries.
* Advanced specialist knowledge in diabetes, wound management, minor surgery, orthotics, and pressure‑relieving devices, including casting techniques.
* Involvement with relevant specialist interest groups.
* Knowledge of national and local priorities and changing trends in the specialty.
Knowledge & Experience – Desirable
* Experience supervising/mentoring staff and clinical placement students.
* Understanding of national/local standards and the clinical governance agenda.
* Active involvement in research, clinical audit, or other quality improvement initiatives.
Skills & Abilities – Essential
* Capability to participate in service development and implement change.
* Good presentation and organisational skills.
* Experience in wound management, ABPI/TBPI, and wound offloading including casting techniques.
* Effective communication with patients and carers of varying levels of understanding.
* Ability to present written information logically.
* Self‑motivation and ability to motivate others.
* Effective workload management in a busy clinic setting.
* Adaptability to unexpected changes and a flexible approach.
* Teamworking skills.
Skills & Abilities – Desirable
* Formal qualification in teaching or health education.
* Experience delivering Diabetic Foot Programs to other professionals.
* Capability to lead service modernisation.
* Experience in staff development and human resource management.
