About the Job

Salary: £30,024 - £32,597 a year pro rata plus £78 washing allowance and £739.50 tool allowance a year pro rata

Hours per week: 14.8

Contract type: Fixed Term for 3 months from start date / Secondment

As a Tradesperson (Improver) at Luton Council, you will support the delivery of high-quality electrical repairs and maintenance services across a variety of property types, including domestic homes, high-rise buildings, and industrial units. Working under the guidance of a senior electrician or supervisor, you will gain the skills and experience necessary to progress toward working independently.

Your role will involve carrying out scheduled repair and maintenance tasks using job tickets and handheld technology, ensuring all work is logged accurately with the appropriate schedule of rate references and completion details. You will use a variety of testing equipment and digital devices to support diagnosis and reporting, and contribute to the efficiency of the service by managing van stock, replenishing materials in line with approved procedures, and recommending stock improvements based on usage trends.

You’ll also undertake measurements from drawings or site assessments to calculate material requirements and ensure orders align with project specifications. A key part of your responsibilities will include maintaining high standards of health and safety, completing NICEIC certificates under supervision, and ensuring worksites are clean, safe, and secure at all times.

This is a hands-on role that offers ongoing training, regular team meetings, and opportunities for professional development as you work towards becoming a fully qualified and autonomous tradesperson.

Please note this role does not attract sponsorship.

About You

You’ll have experience in a range of electrical and related tasks, ideally gained through hands-on work in maintenance or refurbishment settings, or during your studies or apprenticeship. You are progressing in your trade and capable of working with limited supervision, taking initiative to diagnose and resolve minor faults on-site, identifying necessary materials, tools, and ensuring work is completed safely.

With good communication and interpersonal skills, you’re able to deal politely and professionally with tenants, clients, colleagues, and supervisors. You understand the importance of providing a respectful and inclusive service, and are aware of how discrimination can impact both service delivery and workplace relationships.

You hold a recognised electrical qualification such as an NVQ Level 3 (Advanced Apprenticeship), or a City & Guilds qualification/NVQ Level 2 with the 17th Edition IEE Regulations. You also have a working knowledge of health and safety regulations relevant to building and electrical work.

Physically capable of carrying ladders, working at height, and accessing confined spaces such as lofts or roof areas, you are comfortable travelling between sites daily and come prepared with the tools and mindset to get the job done. You are also able to communicate clearly and confidently with members of the public in fluent spoken English, offering advice or assistance when needed.

This is a public facing role so you’ll need to show off your fluency in speaking and writing English.
