Hydrant Technician – Part Time
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for a Fire Hydrant Technician to work 15 hours a week on a permanent, part‑time basis. The position is paid at Grade 6, £31,537 to £34,434 pro‑rata.
About the Role
As a Fire Hydrant Technician you will inspect, test and maintain public fire hydrants across Staffordshire. Working closely with the Water Manager, you will ensure hydrants are fully operational and meet national safety standards, supporting firefighters and protecting the community.
What You’ll Be Doing
* Inspecting, testing and maintaining public fire hydrants to ensure they meet BS750 standards
* Reporting defects and repairs through electronic systems
* Clearing hydrant chambers, replacing or painting lids, and fitting caps and markers
* Conducting flow and pressure testing
* Using handheld tools and devices, including Toughbook laptops and service vehicles
* Updating hydrant locations and coordinates
* Maintaining vehicle and equipment condition and stock levels
* Working outdoors in all weather conditions
Essential Requirements
* A full, clean UK driving licence
* Experience using hand and power tools
* Good communication and team‑working skills
* Able to work independently and use initiative
* Physically capable of lifting heavy items
* Competent IT user (including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
* Strong record‑keeping and administrative skills
* Willingness to work outdoors in all weather
* A commitment to health & safety and wellbeing
Desirable
* NRSWA Qualification (New Roads & Street Works Act 1991, Units 1–6)
* Basic vehicle maintenance experience
* Strong local knowledge of Staffordshire and ability to read maps
Training and Development
Full training and ongoing support will be provided, including internal courses and guidance from the Water Manager.
Equipment and Support
A service vehicle and all necessary equipment will be provided. You will be responsible for its upkeep and compliance with inventory standards.
