Come and join the team! Monmouthshire County Council is looking for someone ready to bring their ecological expertise to one of the UK’s most biodiverse and inspiring landscapes who will be part of a multi-disciplinary award-winning Green Infrastructure and Nature Recovery team. You will provide expert biodiversity and ecological advice, for planning applications, development proposals and planning policy, as well as inputting into HRA’s, appeals and public inquiries to ensure that the County Council meets its statutory obligations in respect of conserving biodiversity, protected species, statutory designated sites and other nature conservation matters. With over 780 SINCs, multiple SSSIs, SACs, NNRs, and the Ramsar-designated Severn Estuary, this is your chance to help protect and restore some of Wales’ most treasured habitats and species. This is a chance to shape how nature thrives across the county, to deliver meaningful, lasting change. What You’ll Do Provide specialist biodiversity and ecological advice for planning applications, development proposals, and planning policies to ensure statutory obligations are met regarding biodiversity, protected species, designated sites, and other conservation matters. Support and advise on the integration of biodiversity within corporate priorities and policies, including delivering training and contributing to the Local Nature Partnership and Nature Recovery Action Plan. Coordinate and conduct habitat and species surveys, monitor wildlife in Monmouthshire, and manage biological records, including working with the South East Wales Biodiversity Records Centre and volunteers. Prepare reports and recommendations for Cabinet or Committees, and present evidence at Public Inquiries relating to biodiversity and ecological matters. Offer ecological advice and information to other council services, stakeholders, and the general public, and contribute to educational, community, and interpretive initiatives What We’re Looking For A degree in biology or a similar subject, and experience using mapping software (like QGIS). Good understanding of nature, conservation, and planning rules. Able to explain things clearly and work well with different people. Can work on your own, manage your time, and travel around the area. Welsh language skills are desirable.
