Strive for Education (Strive) provides education for those who do not attend mainstream school on a full-time basis or who have a specialist provision named in their EHCP. Full details about Strive can be found using the following link striveforeducation.co.uk
Strive is looking to employing a tutor to lead the delivery of a multi-trade construction curriculum. Strive seeks applications from applicants with integrity, imagination and energy for this exciting role.
The construction curriculum will be based at the Vocational Centre in Hookstone, Harrogate. Monday-Thursday would be working with up to 10 students with up to 3 staff. The curriculum for this group is focused on trades and multi-skills subjects such as building, bricklaying, joinery, plumbing, flooring, roofing and possibly electrics. The successful applicant would plan and deliver the curriculum with additional support from the support staff members. Friday could involve working with our core class groups to complete short sessions of practical activities at the workshop. These classes are 6 students with 2 staff.
All sessions are designed to develop key skills in the particular practical areas in addition to meeting personal objectives outlined in their EHCP. Experience in working with young people with ASC/SEMH would be beneficial.
The successful applicant will have a large input into the course set-up, structure, delivery, and assessment methods. This is a great opportunity for the successful applicant to ‘shape’ the course to suit their own experience, skills and strengths. Experience in delivering and assessing in a range of the following areas would be desirable:
Bricklaying, woodwork and joinery, plumbing, roofing, flooring, plastering, electrical work, painting and decorating.
We would not expect the applicant to be skilled and/or qualified in all of these trades. The person appointed will demonstrate enthusiasm and motivation, be a “hands on” person who can encourage young people to engage in this project and develop valuable skills to help them progress into employment in the construction sectors and/or into further training. The experience of the applicant will determine what qualifications students will work towards.
This can be a challenging but rewarding environment, working with young people who may struggle to regulate their emotions at times. Students will at times present challenging behaviours and staff must have the confidence and emotional resilience to deal with this. Strive offers a nurturing environment, small class sizes and high staff to student ratios in order to best support out students and staff. Staff are fully supported during the day with small class sizes and additional Pastoral support timetabled to provide additional support.
