Overview
We are seeking Band 3 Health Care Assistants to join our Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at The Junipers in Exeter. You will quickly become part of a friendly and supportive multi-disciplinary team where you will deliver a package of care to people on our psychiatric intensive care ward to support their journey to recovery.
We believe that with our help, people can improve their mental health to recover independence and return to their local community.
About PICU
The Junipers is a state-of-the-art, 10 bed psychiatric intensive care unit based in the grounds of Wonford House in Exeter. Junipers provides care for men and women with severe mental health needs.
About You
We are looking for a Health Care Assistant. You may already be working in a psychiatric intensive care setting or have an interest in this area. Above all, you will be passionate about providing the highest level of care to the people who use our service. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team will require excellent communication skills.
You will be based on a ward that operates 24/7, so you should be comfortable with shift work. You will qualify for unsocial enhancements in addition to your basic pay.
Main duties of the job
* To assist multi-disciplinary team members in the delivery of care and treatment to people using services. The care provided will encompass social, physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual needs of the individuals.
* Be responsible for undertaking practical procedures under the supervision of trained nursing staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Communication and working relationships: communicate effectively with people using services, form and maintain therapeutic relationships with individuals and other professionals, maintain accurate records, communicate professionally, take and relay telephone messages, provide and receive routine information, participate in ward/team meetings.
* Planning and Organisation: participate in assessment and implementation of individual treatment programmes, prioritise tasks, manage shift workload, participate in flexible shift system (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays).
* Clinical responsibilities: be involved in recovery care plans under supervision, work within your competency limits, participate in risk assessment and management, adhere to Health and Safety policies.
* Patient/Client Care: be aware of each individual’s recovery plan, participate in delivery of therapeutic interventions, support daily living skills, assist in physical nursing care, recognize signs of abuse and escalate concerns, maintain dignity and well-being, monitor nutritional needs, escort individuals as directed, assist with accessing resources, participate in MDT meetings, maintain accurate records and report progress as required.
* Policy and Improvement: complete core training, comply with Trust policies, participate in service development and audits, adhere to infection control precautions.
* Finance, Equipment and Resources: maintain safety and cleanliness, manage stock, follow trust policies regarding patient property and finances, ensure proper documentation.
* Supervision and Leadership: participate in supervision and annual appraisal, support student learning, contribute to leading and learning within the team.
* Information Resources: use IT systems (RiO, e-roster, e-learning) and maintain confidentiality according to policies.
* Freedom to Act: work within standard procedures, use initiative while receiving supervision.
* Other tasks: contribute to a safe therapeutic environment, take on duties assigned by the Line Manager, ensure fitness for duties and training, declare fitness for activities such as Physical Intervention Techniques if required, act quickly to protect safety, work within competency.
Qualifications and Experience
* Essential: Complete the Care Certificate within the first 6 months of employment (or evidence of equivalent approved by the appointing manager). If not, the role may be a trainee position until completion.
* Essential: Previous experience in a care setting or within mental health services; ability to work in a team and maintain professional relationships.
* Desirable: NVQ Level 3 or QCF Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent; other relevant training for working within mental health settings.
* Desirable: Knowledge of mental health and basic physical health presentations; problem solving skills.
