BUSINESS FUNCTION: Engineering

GRADE: ML1/SB3

SALARY: £44,544 per annum

ROLE TYPE: Hybrid

HOURS: 37 per week

REPORTING TO: Supply Chain Delivery Manager

Keep our supply chain on track – lead the transformation that keeps the North moving. Are you ready to take the reins on one of Northern’s most important projects? We’re looking for a confident and capable Project Manager to lead the delivery of our Spares Supply project – a vital part of the next generation of our Technical Support and Spares Supply Agreement (TSSSA).

You’ll be at the heart of the action – bringing people together, managing key milestones, and making sure everything lands safely, smoothly, and on time. From depots and outstations to suppliers and senior leaders, you’ll work across all corners of the business to shape the future of our Engineering Supply Chain.

If you thrive in fast-paced environments, enjoy connecting the dots, and want to drive improvements that make a real difference, this is your chance to step up and lead change that helps keep the North moving.

Are You Confident In?

* Leading a multi-functional project team, mobilising plans and ensuring everyone understands their part in the delivery.
* Coordinating complex project elements – including budgets, resources, risks, and timelines – in a regulated, safety-critical environment.
* Acting as the central link between multiple internal departments, suppliers, and our ROSCO partners to ensure strong, smooth collaboration.
* Holding others to account, escalating issues early, and driving action when progress stalls.
* Designing scalable and repeatable service models that can be applied across other fleets and depots.
* Championing continuous improvement – identifying smarter, more efficient ways of working across the Supply Chain

Are You?

* Experienced in Project Delivery? You’ve got a relevant degree or strong operational experience, ideally in a complex or regulated setting.
* Professionally Qualified? You hold a project management qualification like APM, Prince2, or have equivalent hands-on delivery experience.
* A Strong Communicator? You can influence senior leaders, engage suppliers, and keep internal teams aligned and motivated.
* Detail-Oriented and Organised? You’re able to juggle multiple moving parts without losing sight of the big picture.
* A Problem Solver? You’re proactive, pragmatic, and able to adapt under pressure while keeping your eye on the goal.
* Focused on Long-Term Success? You’ve led multi-year strategies, created lasting improvements, and know how to deliver meaningful change

What Success Looks Like

* The Spares Supply project delivered in full, on time, and aligned with service performance expectations
* A clearly defined process/service blueprint that supports long-term improvement across the wider Engineering Supply Chain
* High engagement and accountability across all project contributors – internal and external

Why Northern?

We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North - connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we’re celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B - we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a medical assessment.

No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
