Main duties of the job
The GP Retainer will provide high-quality, patient-centred care through face-to-face and telephone consultations, managing a broad range of acute and chronic conditions. Duties include assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with undifferentiated presentations, issuing prescriptions, reviewing results and correspondence, completing clinical administration, and making appropriate referrals. The post-holder will work both autonomously and collaboratively within a supportive multidisciplinary team, contributing to continuity of care, clinical governance, and service development within the practice.

Job Summary
The GP Retainer will provide high-quality, patient-centred primary care within a supportive and well-established practice environment. The post-holder will manage a clinical caseload, delivering safe, effective, and evidence-based care to registered and temporary patients. The role offers flexibility in line with the GP Retainer Scheme while maintaining continuity of care and professional standards.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Provide face-to-face and telephone consultations in accordance with the agreed timetable.
* Assess, diagnose, and manage patients presenting with acute, chronic, and undifferentiated conditions.
* Make professional, autonomous clinical decisions in line with current guidelines and best practice.
* Prescribe safely and appropriately in accordance with practice formulary and national guidance.
* Review laboratory results, correspondence, and clinical documents in a timely manner.
* Undertake home visits where clinically appropriate and agreed.
* Develop and implement person-centred care plans.
* Refer patients to secondary care or community services as appropriate.
* Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical records using the practice clinical system (EMIS).
* Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities as appropriate to sessions worked.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Applicants must hold a recognised medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) and be fully registered with the General Medical Council with a current licence to practise. Candidates must have completed GP Specialty Training and hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Practice or be on the GMC GP Register. Applicants must meet appraisal and revalidation requirements and be eligible to work under the NHS GP Retainer Scheme.
* Previous experience working within UK primary care or General Practice is desirable, particularly experience managing a broad range of acute and chronic conditions independently. An interest in quality improvement, audit, or service development would be advantageous. Experience working within a multidisciplinary team and within a Primary Care Network (PCN) setting would be beneficial. Additional skills or special interests, such as womens health, chronic disease management, minor procedures, or teaching and mentoring, would also be welcomed. Familiarity with EMIS or similar electronic patient record systems is desirable.
