Purpose of the role
To design, develop, and implement solutions to complex business problems, collaborating with stakeholders to understand their needs and requirements, and design and implement solutions that meet those needs while balancing technology risks against business delivery, driving consistency.
Responsibilities
* Design and develop solutions as evolving products that meet business requirements and align with modern software engineering practices and automated delivery tooling, including identifying and implementing appropriate technologies and platforms.
* Perform targeted design activities that apply suitable workload placement strategy and maximise the benefit of cloud capabilities such as elasticity, serverless, and containerisation.
* Create best‑practice designs incorporating security principles (defence in depth, blast‑radius reduction) that satisfy the bank’s resiliency expectations.
* Balance risks and controls to deliver the agreed business and technology value.
* Adopt standardised solutions where applicable, and, if none fits, contribute to their ongoing evolution.
* Support operational teams with fault‑finding and performance issue resolution, leveraging available tooling.
* Assess solution design impact in terms of risk, capacity, and cost, including estimation of project changes and ongoing run‑costs.
* Develop architecture inputs required for compliance with the bank’s governance processes, including artefacts for architecture, privacy, security, and records‑management governance.
* Advise and influence decision making, contribute to policy development, and collaborate closely with other functions and business divisions.
* Lead a team or complex tasks, setting objectives, coaching employees, appraising performance, and determining reward outcomes.
* Demonstrate leadership behaviours—Listen, Energise, Align, and Develop—to create an environment where colleagues thrive and deliver consistently excellent standards.
* Guide collaborative assignments, identify the need for additional specialisations, and propose cross‑functional methodologies to meet required outcomes.
* Consult on complex issues, providing advice to People Leaders to support resolution of escalated issues.
* Identify ways to mitigate risk and develop new policies or procedures to support the control and governance agenda.
* Take ownership for managing risk and strengthening controls related to the work performed.
* Collaborate with other areas to align and contribute to organisational objectives, keeping up to speed with business activity and strategy.
* Engage in complex data analysis from multiple internal and external sources to solve problems creatively and effectively.
* Communicate complex information—including sensitive or difficult content—to diverse audiences.
* Influence or convince stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes.
Qualifications and Experience
* Collaborate with Product Owners and Business Analysts to understand ‘What’ and ‘Why’, and the AS‑IS and TO‑BE user/customer/capability journey.
* Conduct technical analysis in a complex payment‑processing environment, defining solutions that meet requirements and align with the CIO Technology roadmap, reviewed by Tower Lead Solution Architects.
* Navigate all governance processes within Barclays to obtain full approval before designing and discussing solutions across multiple teams and areas.
Preferred Skills
* Knowledge of the Cards & Payments domain, particularly Commercial Cards.
* Practical experience designing cloud solutions using Microservices, Domain‑Driven, and Event‑Driven Architecture, and delivering change on large regulatory programmes.
* Strong risk‑management, change‑management, and transformation skills, aligned with enterprise principles and technical depth.
