Consultant Upper GI Surgeon with an Interest in Bariatric Surgery
The closing date is 26 November 2025
We are excited to invite applications for Consultant Upper GI Surgeon with an interest in Bariatric Surgery and Benign Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery. The post will be based on the Heartlands and Solihull Hospital sites.
Our bariatric surgery service is supported by a busy weight management service which receives approximately 4500 referrals to this service per year. University Hospitals Birmingham currently perform approximately 200 bariatric cases per year between the Solihull and Heartlands sites but there is a view to expand this number over time. This post will contribute towards this increased capacity. The bariatric service is supported by a full in‑house multidisciplinary team and fortnightly multidisciplinary meetings.
Our unit is also an extremely busy centre for complex benign upper gastrointestinal surgery. The trust has long been a leader in day‑case anti‑reflux surgery and are currently looking to expand our provision of anti‑reflux procedures. We are supported by an in‑house oesophageal physiology laboratory.
Main duties of the job
The trust is dedicated to expansion of elective services and our Solihull site hosts a new elective theatre complex including six state‑of‑the‑art operating theatres, one of which is dedicated for bariatric and benign upper gastrointestinal surgery every day. The trust have also recently expanded our surgical robotics programme to include benign upper gastrointestinal cases (including bariatric and advanced hiatal cases) on one day per week. In addition the Heartlands Treatment Centre houses our endoscopy suite and day‑operating theatres one of which is dedicated for performing a large volume of cholecystectomies for the Trust. This is a useful resource for training and allows for additional capacity on other theatre lists for more complex cases. Provision for this list is shared by all Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary surgeons across all Trust sites and the appointee will also contribute towards this service.
In addition to bariatric multidisciplinary meeting the unit undertakes a monthly radiology meeting and monthly benign upper gastrointestinal multidisciplinary meeting to discuss complex cases amongst surgical colleagues, gastroenterologists and oesophageal physiologists.
