Offer description

This is a wonderful opportunity for someone looking to develop their tractor operation and estate management skills in a conservation setting, with opportunities to further develop their warden and machinery management operations. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to lead on delivering machinery works, reserve infrastructure maintenance and arable operations across RSPB's Wiltshire reserves. What's the role about? You will be joining a small friendly team based at RSPB Winterbourne Downs set in the picturesque rolling downlands close to Stonehenge and Salisbury Plain. You will be delivering management at RSPB Winterbourne Downs and RSPB Roundbarrow nature reserves to reconnect the landscape for the stone-curlew and iconic chalk downland wildlife, from corn buntings and lapwings to green-winged orchids and Adonis blue butterflies. Working alongside the Warden and Estate Operation Manager, this will involve using your practical skills for cultivating nesting plots for stone-curlew & lapwing, undertake hedge and scrub management, topping grassland for electric fences and footpaths. Other work includes using power tools such as brush-cutters, herbicide spraying, repairing fences & built infrastructure, and overseeing machinery maintenance. You will arrive at an exciting time as the RSPB expand their Wiltshire Chalk reserve operation base and deliver new management practises from emerging Agri-Environmental Stewardship Schemes. There will also be opportunities to work across the wider Wiltshire and Dorset landscape on other RSPB nature reserves and projects. With opportunities to develop through training and cross team working. What we need from you: Essential qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience: Knowledge and experience of practical habitat and estate management. Experience of operating and maintaining machinery, equipment and infrastructure. Particularly relevant are use of tractor and cultivation implements, hedge-cutter, tractor mounted or drawn sprayer, brush-cutters and chainsaw. Lantra or equivalent qualification in ATV, chainsaw, tractor, brushcutter, pesticides (PA1, PA2, PA6). 4x4 driving and Trailer towing experience. Full driving licence valid for use in the UK. Desirable qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience: Livestock management. Experience of workshop, farmyard and building maintenance. Experience in managing volunteers. An interest and experience of bird and vegetation surveying. Additional information: This role will involve lone working and working in remote locations. This role will require occasional early morning and evening working. This is a Permanent, Full-Time role for 37.5 hours per week but we will consider part-time working. Please note on your application should you wish to be considered for part-time working. We are looking to conduct interviews for this position from 13th November 2025. For further information please contact Estate Operations Manager beatrice.walecki@rspb.org.uk As part of this application process you will be asked to complete an application form including evidence on how you meet the skills, knowledge, and experience listed above. We are committed to developing an inclusive and diverse RSPB, in which everyone feels supported, valued, and able to be their full selves. To achieve our vision of creating a world richer in nature, we need more people, and more diverse people, on nature’s side. People of colour and disabled people are currently underrepresented across the environment, climate, sustainability, and conservation sector. If you identify as a person of colour and/or disabled, we are particularly interested in receiving your application. Contact us to discuss any additional support you may need to complete your application. The RSPB is an equal opportunities employer. This role is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
