Academic Development Programme
New Assistant Professors will undertake a 5‑year development programme, at the end of which they are expected to be promoted to Associate Professor. The programme consists of a variety of development opportunities and the time to reflect and develop.
Summary of Role
You will contribute to a range of teaching, scholarship and administration as we move into our new facility, the Birmingham Centre for Anatomy, Surgical and Clinical Skills (BCASCS). In addition, you will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship, developing and maintaining mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students, while ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others carry out theirs. Teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to:
(a) the management, development (including programme/module review) and delivery of teaching and assessment at all levels,
(b) enhancement of the student experience and employability. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including:
(a) providing expert advice to staff and students, and
(b) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods. You will be expected to advance teaching and learning practice in anatomy, specifically in terms of technology‑enhanced education and clinical imaging, and play an important role in student academic and pastoral support. Management and administration is likely to include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, school outreach, or similar activities at Department/School level or further within the University.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
Education
* Involved in the introduction or improvement of technology‑enhanced education and educational resources.
* Introducing modern, technology‑enhanced educational tools e.g. augmented, virtual or mixed reality; investigating and developing available technology and keeping up with fast‑moving trends.
* Developing innovative, integrated learning opportunities for healthcare students in BCASCS, integrating clinical content with fundamental sciences (e.g. anatomy and medical imaging, 3D scanning and printing of scarce or irreplaceable material).
* Embedding these resources across programmes, including integration into assessment where appropriate.
* Involved across the range of teaching and learning activities in anatomy (gross anatomy, histology, neuro‑anatomy, embryology, radiology).
* Contributing to curriculum development and/or renewal.
* Developing and managing approaches to teaching and learning that are best practice in the subject area or institution.
* Advising others on learning, teaching and assessment.
* Contributing to and publishing scholarly output.
* Delivering specific professional programmes where appropriate.
* Advancing the practice of teaching within the School, playing an important role in student academic support.
* Informing teaching practice by anatomical or pedagogical research or scholarship.
* Frequently updating subject expertise and undertaking personal professional development in teaching, including self‑reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback.
* Playing an important role in recruitment and admission of students where appropriate.
* Co‑supervising doctoral students to completion.
* Using a variety of methods in teaching and advising individuals and groups of undergraduates, postgraduates or external students, including: teaching, assessing and examining courses at a range of levels; planning and reviewing own teaching approaches and encouraging others; creating and designing learning and assessment materials, including technology‑enhanced resources and high‑quality dissected anatomical specimens; designing contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging curriculum content; working collaboratively with colleagues to design and deliver teaching, learning and assessment; using digital resources effectively to support learning and assessment; making substantial contributions to the design of teaching programmes more widely; undertaking and developing the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining; developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods, including technology‑enhanced methods; contributing substantially to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement/outreach activities that enhance student experience or employability; devising and supervising projects, student dissertations and practical work.
Management/Administration
* Contributing to Department/School administration.
* Initializing and managing a team to devise and implement new or revised processes (e.g. recruitment drives).
* Supporting and leading management of anatomical collections and human material audit activities.
* Assisting the Designated Individual for Anatomical Examination and professional services staff in activities related to compliance with Human Tissue Act and anatomical legislation.
* Advising on personal development of colleagues and students.
* Contributing to administrative activities within the University (appeals panels, working groups).
* Managing enterprise, business development and public engagement activities.
* Contributing to recruitment (attendance at Open Days), public engagement, widening participation, school outreach.
* Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring, evaluation and active challenge of unacceptable behaviour.
Citizenship
* Pursuing activities that help others to engage effectively.

Person Specification

General, Qualifications and Education
* Normally, a higher degree relevant to the discipline area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.
* Medical or dental degree and/or degree in anatomy or related subject.
* Educational qualification (e.g. postgraduate certificate/diploma in higher education).
* Substantial experience of providing technology‑enhanced education (virtual, augmented or mixed reality; 3D printing).
* Extensive teaching experience and scholarship within anatomy.
* Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning.
* Skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels.
* Membership of Anatomical Society, British Association of Clinical Anatomists, or equivalent learned society.
Learning and Teaching Requirements
* Excellent knowledge of anatomy, histology, embryology and neuro‑anatomy.
* Good understanding of HTA regulations and codes of practice.
* Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes.
* Experience of teaching competence using human donor material.
* Evidence of innovative teaching methods.
* Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching and advising colleagues, including technology‑enhanced methods.
* Experience and achievement in knowledge transfer, enterprise or similar activity that enhances the student experience or employability.
* Experience in public engagement, outreach, recruitment, scholarly outputs or similar activities (desired).
* Expertise in clinical imaging (desired).
Management and Administration Requirements
* Ability to contribute to School/Departmental management processes.
* Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
* Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
* Experience of championing equality, diversity and inclusion in own work area.
* Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied.
