Apprentice – Cabling Engineer
Responsibilities
* Install and decommission cabling systems (copper Cat 6 and multimode fibre optic) according to specifications and industry standards.
* Decommission redundant cabling systems and racks.
* Manage cable routing, organization, and termination to maintain a tidy and efficient data centre environment.
* Identify and resolve issues with cabling infrastructure, including network connectivity problems.
* Conduct tests to ensure quality and functionality of cabling systems and maintain accurate documentation.
* Assist with installation and configuration of network equipment, including servers, switches, and other hardware; and decommission equipment when no longer in use.
* Monitor the physical environment of the data centre (temperature, airflow, power) and report issues for resolution.
* Collaborate with Data Centre Engineers, contractors, and Network Engineers to ensure smooth operation.
* Adhere to safety regulations, industry standards, and company procedures.
Skills and Qualifications
* Desire to develop a career within Data Centre Infrastructure Engineering.
* Basic technical knowledge of structured data cabling studies (desired but not required).
* Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems related to cabling and network connectivity.
* Physical dexterity and comfort with hand and power tools, manual handling, working at height, and long periods on feet.
* Attention to detail for accurate cable installation, record updating, and testing.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills with team, project teams, and staff.
* Safety awareness and willingness to attend health and safety training courses.
* Willingness to attend industry training during apprenticeship (structured cabling, health & safety, electrical safety, confined spaces).
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and ability to learn other software.
* Self‑motivated, punctual, reliable, can‑do attitude, excellent time‑management and prioritisation skills.
* For roles in Debden (Essex) and Dunstable (Bedfordshire), willingness to travel between sites and possession of own means of transportation.
