Senior Environmental Advisor
Application Deadline: 1 May 2026
Department: Land and Mineral Resources
Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time
Location: Raisby Quarry & Concrete Plant, Durham
Description
Multi-Site Leadership Role Waste, Water & Air Quality:
We are currently seeking a Senior Environmental Advisor to join our Environmental Team at Breedon.
This role is being offered on a hybrid basis, ideally suitable candidate based within the North of England or Scotland. Regular travel across sites nationally required - you'll need to be comfortable spending time traveling.
To support your travelling, this role comes with a Company Car, or Car Allowance.
About the Role
Are you an experienced environmental professional looking to drive genuine impact and provide strategic influence? We're seeking a Senior Environmental Advisor to take ownership of environmental performance across approximately 150 sites across the North of England and Scotland, covering the full spectrum of waste management, water quality, and air emissions compliance.
This isn't a box-ticking role. You'll be the environmental conscience and champion for our operations, working with site managers, operations teams, and operational leadership to drive meaningful improvements while ensuring we stay ahead of regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Environmental Leadership
* Own the environmental outcomes, developing and implementing strategies that balance compliance, operational efficiency, and genuine environmental improvement
* Build relationships with site managers and operational teams who'll genuinely value your expertise and rely on your guidance
* Translate complex regulations into practical, workable solutions that operations teams can implement
Day-to-Day Impact
* Conduct site assessments and audits that identify both risks and opportunities for improvement
* Manage compliance across waste (including hazardous waste), water discharge permits, and air emissions. Driving the implementation of the EASR changes.
* Investigate incidents and near-misses, getting to root causes and implementing the systems and following through the opportunities to mitigate recurrence.
* Monitor emerging Scottish and UK environmental legislation and assess implications for operations.
Collaboration & Influence
* Work with procurement, engineering, technical and operations to embed environmental cultural behaviours into the business from the ground up
* Liaise confidently with SEPA and other regulators
* Develop training and guidance that actually changes cultural behaviour, not just ticks compliance box.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
Essential Experience
* ~10 years in an environmental advisory, compliance, or management role
* Solid understanding of waste regulations (Duty of Care, Waste Framework Directive, hazardous waste)
* Hands-on experience with water quality monitoring and discharge consents
* Knowledge of air quality legislation and emissions monitoring.
* Experience working across multiple sites or supporting diverse operations
* Track record of building credibility with operational teams who may not naturally prioritize environmental issues
What Will Make You Stand Out
* Experience working in Scotland or strong understanding of SEPA's approach and Scottish regulatory landscape
* Background of multi-site environmental compliance management
* Someone who gets energized by solving complex problems rather than frustrated by them
* Ability to communicate technical environmental issues to non-technical audiences
You'll Thrive Here If You
* Can bring pragmatic problem-solving to compliance arena
* Enjoy variety - no two sites are the same
* Want autonomy but know when to escape and collaborate
* Care about actual environmental compliance and outcomes
* Can challenge constructively and influence without formal authority
What's In It for You
* Being part of an Innovative Company: Breedon are a great company. A disrupter, the change, the entrepreneur within the sector. This brings difference and challenge. It about walking the tightrope between good governance and flexibility to enable that position to shine.
* Scope & Autonomy: Real ownership over environmental strategy for 150+ sites
* Career Development: Opportunity to shape environmental practices at scale and grow.
* Impact: See tangible results from your work - cleaner operations, reduced incidents, improved environmental performance
* Variety: Multi-site role covering diverse challenges across waste, water, and air
* Base: Scotland-based with regional and national travel (approximately 35% of time)
* Competitive Package: sector leading salary, car/allowance, pension.
If you're an environmental professional who's moved beyond pure compliance and wants to drive real change across a substantial operational footprint, we'd like to hear from you.
Apply with your CV and a brief note on what attracts you to multi-site environmental advisory work.
