Project Officer, National Literacy Champions
Join to apply for the Project Officer, National Literacy Champions role at National Literacy Trust
£26,000 per year
Full‑time, 35 hours per week
Fixed‑term role until the end of January 2027
Based in London SW8 / home and flexible working
What you’ll be doing
The Literacy Champions project trains, engages and supports volunteers to design new and exciting ways to promote literacy in their neighbourhoods or workplaces. This includes everything from community book swaps and reading corners to book gifting and reading groups. You will help volunteers identify opportunities, provide training and support, and mobilise key community partnerships. You will also provide essential project administration, including ordering resources, processing safeguarding information and maintaining accurate records, and help create processes that enable volunteers to deliver sustainable projects and activities that improve literacy outcomes.
You will be contracted to our office in London but the role is suitable for home and flexible working. The majority of your work will be carried out from home, though you will need to travel to London for staff and team days and to support project delivery and partnerships – a day a week on average. Travel costs to London are not covered, but all national travel costs will be covered.
What we’re looking for
* Experience planning and supporting project delivery or events, ideally in a charity or not‑for‑profit context.
* Excellent knowledge of safeguarding practice.
* Good communication, organisational, adaptability and problem‑solving skills.
* Experience training, engaging and supporting volunteers is an advantage.
Why our work is so vital
Literacy changes everything. It gives you the tools to get the most out of life, and the power to shape your future. It’s the key to knowledge, confidence and inspiration. Better outcomes at school, better jobs. If children grow up without the tools to communicate, without books to read or opportunities to write, it’s harder to reach their potential.
What we offer you
Competitive salary plus a generous leave allowance totalling 39 days (including bank holidays and office closure between Christmas and New Year), 8% pension contributions, a cycle‑to‑work scheme, an employee assistance programme and other health and wellbeing benefits.
Our people are our most important asset, and we value and respect diversity in all its forms. We particularly welcome applications from those from Black and Asian backgrounds, as well as candidates with disabilities and from the communities in which we work.
