Post: Speciality Doctor (ST3 - ST6 Equivalent) in Adult Cardiac Surgery
Appointment: Fixed Time (6-month fixed term with opportunity to extend, subject to appraisal)

Location: St. Thomas\' Hospital, Westminster Bridge Road, London SE1 7EH. The post may require working at other locations owned or served by the Trust as needed.
Main duties
The post will be based at St. Thomas\' Hospital and will involve providing clinical services for cardiac surgery patients in support of consultant surgeons. Duties include training and mentoring less experienced colleagues and other staff, participation in clinical audit and clinical research projects. Clinical areas covered will mainly include theatres, wards, ICU/step-down units and outpatients. The post holder will participate in activities aimed at ensuring a high standard of patient care and will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.

Job responsibilities
Clinical:
* The post-holder, with colleagues, will be responsible for the provision of Cardiac Surgery services to the Guy\'s & St Thomas\' NHS Foundation Trust, including diagnosis and treatment of patients in hospitals, health centres or clinics as required.
* Continuing clinical responsibility for patients in your charge, with appropriate delegation and training of staff.
Training of junior staff:
The post-holder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to them in agreement with their supervising consultant.
Teaching:
The post-holder will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as appropriate.
Clinical Governance:
All medical staff are expected to participate in clinical governance activities, including audit, guideline and protocol development, and risk management, with evidence of contribution and audit for appraisal.
Other responsibilities:
* Mutual obligation to monitor hours in line with local and national guidance.
* Adherence to New Deal and European Working Time Directive guidelines.
* Educational Programme: participate in educational activities and be assigned a professional development mentor.
* Appraisal: all medical staff are required to undertake appraisal.
* Other duties as required to support the post purpose and Trust needs.
Person Specification
Professional Qualifications
* Essential: Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practise
* Essential: MRCS or equivalent
* Desirable: Higher degree
Clinical Experience
* Essential: Approximately two years full-time clinical experience in cardiothoracic surgery including pre- and post-operative care
* Essential: Experience as first assistant in cardiac surgery
* Desirable: Sub-specialty courses

* Essential: Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
