North Yorkshire Council is seeking an experienced Principal Planning Officer to join the Development Management team on a temporary contract, with a strong possibility of extension. As Principal Planning Officer, you will take the lead on complex, high-profile, and strategic planning applications across the West Team area (Harrogate and Skipton). You’ll play a key role in shaping development across one of England’s most dynamic and scenic regions, working closely with key stakeholders, elected members, and communities to deliver sustainable, high-quality planning outcomes. Location: Hybrid – 1 day per week in-office (Harrogate or Skipton) site visits Contract: Temporary (initially 3 months, potential to extend) ⏰ Hours: 37 hours per week Pay Rate: £38.87/per hour (via Umbrella) Directorate: Community Development – Planning Services Essential Requirements: * A degree in Town Planning or a related subject (or equivalent technical knowledge/experience). * Eligible for membership of the RTPI (Chartered Membership is desirable but not essential). * Proven experience of working on major and complex planning applications. * Experience project managing strategic development sites. * Experience presenting at Planning Committees and attending Public Inquiries or Hearings. * Experience negotiating Section 106 agreements or Community Infrastructure Levy matters. * Working knowledge of Town and Country Planning legislation and national/local planning policy. * Competent with planning IT systems and Microsoft Office
