Job Overview

Experienced Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner leading specialist care across the Liverpool Neonatal Partnership and the Neonatal Surgical Unit at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Requires at least 2 years of advanced neonatal practice.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Provide advanced clinical practice with expert skills and autonomous decision making.
  • Perform a secondment to the Connect North West Neonatal Transport service to develop ANNP skills.
  • Independently manage clinical conditions, make autonomous decisions and seek advice when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate advanced communication skills and collaborate with multidisciplinary team.
  • Evaluate own practice, maintain competency, and complete yearly clinical competency assessments.

Detailed Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Hold specialist knowledge of neonates through an ANNP training programme and experience post qualification.
  • Offer expert clinical care for babies at LWH and Alder Hey neonatal surgical ICU.
  • Maintain a strong patient and family focus, applying patient‑ and family‑centred care and shared decision making.
  • Lead high‑risk deliveries covering resuscitation, stabilisation, and transfer using advanced techniques.
  • Respond to neonatal emergencies following agreed protocols, initiating appropriate intervention.
  • Undertake independent prescribing and evaluate drug therapies under trust policy.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/families regarding care decisions and involve them in care planning.
  • Provide counselling and support to parents of babies in intensive care and educate carers about their baby’s condition.
  • Contribute to antenatal discussions when pregnancy abnormalities are identified.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of neonatal care.
  • Attend ward rounds and contribute to the clinical management of individual patients, including monitoring response to treatment.
  • Participate in the National Immunisation Programme and neonatal audiology and retinopathy screening programmes.
  • Make and receive referrals to and from the collaborative care team.

Leadership, Education and Development

  • Actively participate in an annual personal development review covering all four pillars of practice.
  • Support workforce capacity through teaching, learning activities and development of educational materials.
  • Continuously develop clinical and non‑clinical skills via self‑directed learning.
  • Maintain continuous professional development and stay updated with neonatal research advances.
  • Lead in teaching the expanded role of the nurse.

Research, Audit and Service Development

Actively engage in audit and research activities, using expert knowledge to identify gaps and work toward filling them. Facilitate development of research and audit plans through professional networks.

Person Specification

Leadership and Management

  • Evidence of leadership at local level.
  • Ability to manage a team and prioritise workload.
  • Operational knowledge of adjacent services.
  • Team‑building skills and ability to manage emerging practitioners.
  • Experience within adjacent services.

Education

  • Master’s Level Award (level 7) demonstrating all four pillars of advanced practice capability.
  • V300 – Non‑Medical Prescribing course.
  • Working towards Honorary Lecturer status with local HEI.
  • NLS Instructor.

Research and Audit

  • Research skills.

Advanced Clinical Practice Skills, Knowledge & Aptitudes

  • Minimum 2 years as an ANNP post‑qualification.
  • Broad and advanced knowledge of clinical pathophysiology.
  • Significant experience in neonatal intensive care as an ANNP.
  • Sound knowledge of invasive and non‑invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Competence in foundation neonatal critical care‑specific clinical skills.
  • NLS Qualification.
  • Competence in performing Neonatal Cranial Ultrasound scans.
