We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Psychiatrist to join our dedicated Mental Health Team at HMP Chelmsford, a Category B local prison and Young Offender Institution for adult males aged 18+ based in Chelmsford. In this role you will work collaboratively within a well‑established multidisciplinary team, providing assessment, treatment and ongoing management for patients with both stable and acute mental health needs. You will play a vital part in delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care within a unique and highly rewarding clinical environment while also contributing to service development and clinical leadership.
Working Pattern
Part‑time hours are available. Shifts run from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. The role is based on‑site at HMP Chelmsford.
Main Responsibilities
As a Mental Health Psychiatrist, you will:
Carry out comprehensive psychiatric and medical assessments, treating individuals with both stable and acute mental health needs.
Manage complex cases where mental and physical health intersect.
Take the lead on safe and effective prescribing and contribute to key clinical decisions through MDT discussions.
Ensure care is evidence‑based and aligned with NICE guidance.
Support senior clinicians, shape service direction and drive continuous improvement.
Collaborate closely with a skilled multidisciplinary team, prison staff and external partners to deliver coordinated, safe and compassionate care.
Qualifications
GMC‑registered medical professional.
On the Specialist Register in General Adult Psychiatry or Forensic Psychiatry.
Approved Clinician (AC) status.
Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.
Strong understanding of multi‑disciplinary and multi‑agency working.
Up‑to‑date knowledge in adult psychiatry and personality disorder.
Awareness of current mental health policy, legislation and service provision.
