Job Description:
JOB SUMMARY:
To perform and assist in a broad range of activities related to the use of radioactive substances in patient investigation and treatment. The work will be carried out at the Belfast City Hospital Cancer Centre and the Royal Victoria Hospital Imaging Centre. The Nuclear Medicine Department utilizes modern radioisotope imaging techniques, including dual detector gamma cameras with SPECT CT and PET CT scanners.
The department operates flexibly to meet clinical needs, and staff are expected to develop a wide range of competencies. There may be rotational duties across both sites.
MAIN DUTIES:
1. Perform radionuclide imaging and organ uptake measurements, including complex investigations, and analyze image data.
2. Conduct in-vitro studies such as GFR tests and analyze data quantitatively.
3. Prepare data for clinical reports.
4. Archive clinical data securely following departmental protocols.
5. Supervise and train junior staff.
6. Dispense, assay, and administer radio pharmaceuticals for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
7. Assist in scheduling patient studies and maintaining patient records, including oversight of the Nuclear Medicine Service.
8. Prepare radio pharmaceuticals and radio-labeled blood products as needed.
9. Provide technical expertise for research and development, and evaluate new procedures and equipment.
10. Act as an Operator under IRMER regulations, maintaining competency records.
11. Ensure compliance with departmental Local Rules and health and safety regulations.
12. Maintain nucleonic equipment and calibrate imaging devices.
13. Keep departmental records compliant with legislation such as IRMER and the Radioactive Substances Act.
14. Participate in emergency call-outs and activities related to the Radioactive Accident Treatment Centre.
15. Contribute to staff reviews and business planning for the Radioisotope Service.
16. Attend training courses and engage in professional development activities.
17. Maintain training and CPD activities to uphold registration with relevant professional bodies.
Experience, Qualifications, and Registration:
1. Diploma of the College of Radiographers or a degree in Physics, Radiography, Applied Physics, or similar, with 3 years' relevant experience including at least 1 year in Nuclear Medicine, or successful completion of recognized nuclear medicine training, or a Diploma/HND with 4 years' relevant experience including 1 year in Nuclear Medicine.
2. Eligibility for membership of the register of clinical technologists or registration with HCPC as a diagnostic Radiographer.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Experience with PC applications, especially spreadsheets and word processing.
* Understanding of radioactivity and medical applications of radioactive substances.
* Knowledge of radionuclide imaging principles and radiation protection practices.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and within a team.
