National Grid is hiring a Control Room Manager to work on site at our Viking Link Interconnector in Bicker Fen, Lincolnshire. In this role, reporting to the UK Asset Operations and Maintenance Manager, you will line‑manage a team of HVDC Control Room Operators, oversee safe operation of the interconnector, and maintain a resilient control‑room workforce.
What you'll do
* Line‑manage a team of shift operators, prioritising safety and setting objectives, planning development and training needs.
* Develop team members, deliver training and mentoring to achieve Control Room authorisations, conduct refresher assessments and plan recruitment for resilience.
* Develop and maintain control‑room operating procedures and guidance so operations meet policies and safety rules.
* Collaborate closely with partners and the National Electricity System Operator (NESO), representing the business in governance forums.
* Work with other teams and suppliers to improve operational and commercial systems.
* Represent the company at Interconnectors Operating Protocol meetings with NESO.
* Respond to safety concerns and system issues, coordinating with the control‑room team, on‑site colleagues and contractors to manage alarms and messages.
* Drive the delivery of specific control‑room projects, ensuring cost effectiveness and high standards of environmental and safety performance.
* Participate in a standby rota as an escalation point for site incidents and interventions, enacting emergency procedures including fire marshal and incident controller duties during evacuations.
What you'll need
* Authorised/Previous authorisation in Operations and/or Safety is desirable.
* Experience in a control‑room environment or engineering background, with knowledge of complex systems such as SCADA, HV AC/DC control systems and dispatch systems.
* Experience working within a High Voltage or similar environment, including both electrical and mechanical system knowledge.
* Confidence and ability to make decisions under pressure in a time‑critical process environment.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of influencing teams and leading effectively.
* Knowledge of safety and environmental requirements and proven ability to respond to emergency situations.
* Experience managing on‑call activities and making decisions in a pressured environment.
What you'll get
A competitive salary between £67,000 - £83,000 – dependent on capability. You will receive up to 30% bonus based on personal and company performance and a contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum of 12% of salary.
